It could be a case of icon overload --- L.L.Bean, the venerable haberdasher for rugged New Englanders, is unveiling the Fenway Boat & Tote, a limited edition version of the company’s signature tote made from the rain delay tarp used to protect the Fenway Park infield from bad weather elements during the 2010 and 2011 Boston baseball seasons.
Both L.L.Bean and Fenway Park are celebrating their 100th anniversaries this year, and that convergence of milestones was the inspiration for “upcycling” the infield tarp and transforming pieces of it into Fenway Boat & Totes.
Needless to say, such an item would thoughtfully accessorize even the most fashion-forward of Red Sox fans.
Like a Rembrandt etching, the Fenway Boat & Tote promises to be rare; only 2,012 have been produced, and a few are said to sport grass stains.
According to L.L.Bean, the Fenway Boat & Tote will be available for purchase beginning at 9:00 a.m. on Tuesday, June 12. Featured on llbean.com, the tote will be priced at $59.95 and will be sold at the L.L.Bean flagship store in Freeport, Maine, as well as the Massachusetts L.L.Bean stores. Those stores are in Burlington, Dedham, and Mansfield.
Due to anticipated demand, sales will be limited to one per customer, L.L.Bean said.
