Hood Blimp is set to return to air space above Fenway Park
HP Hood LLC, a brand known for such dairy products as ice cream, announced Friday that its signature Hood Blimp is about to take to the skies over Fenway Park for the first time since 2008.
Weather permitting, plans call for the airborne icon to be aloft for Saturday evening’s scheduled game between the Red Sox and the Minnesota Twins, Lynnfield-based Hood said.
Hood said it began leasing blimps for several months during the summer, starting in 1996. But apparently blimp demand has been high the last few summers, and the blimp was unavailable in the time slots that the company wanted, Hood said; the last time Hood leased a blimp was in 2008.
With the blimp returning to Boston skies, Hood said it is sponsoring a contest titled the “Hood Blimp Spotting” campaign. Each photo of the Hood Blimp shared via social media channels will give fans a chance to win Hood/Red Sox prize packs including items like a Hood Ice Cream party, Red Sox tickets, and a ride in the Hood Blimp, the company said. Fans can post a picture to the contest tab on HP Hood’s Facebook page or tweet the photo with the #HoodBlimp hashtag.
Hood added in a statement: “In addition to filming a number of Red Sox games broadcast on New England Sports Network (NESN) and Fox Sports with an on-board high definition camera, the Blimp will fly over a variety of New England events in August and September. This includes 12 Red Sox home games, the Rock n’ Roll Half Marathon in Providence, the Hampton Beach Seafood Festival, the Newport International Boat Show, and more.”Chris Reidy can be reached at firstname.lastname@example.org.
