Sand 9 Inc., a Cambridge company specializing in precision timing products, said in a press release Wednesday that Ericsson has invested $3 million in the company.

Headquartered in Sweden, Ericsson is a global provider of communications technology and services.

Wireline communications infrastructure and cellular base stations rely heavily on timing products. Sand 9’s focus is micro-electromechanical systems, or MEMS, timing products.

According to the company, its products offer significant advantages over quartz crystal products that currently dominate this market. Sand 9 said its timing products offer greater immunity to electromagnetic interference and vibration , which ensures precision timing—even in ruggedized environments.

In June, Sand 9 announced that it had raised a total of $23 million in its Series C financing round led by Intel Capital with significant participation from Vulcan Capital. Intel Capital and Vulcan Capital join existing investors Commonwealth Capital Ventures, Flybridge Capital Partners, General Catalyst Partners, Khosla Ventures, and CSR in the round.
