Charley’s on Newbury Street closes, saying it was unable to renew its lease

The Charley’s restaurant on Newbury Street in Boston’s Back Bay neighborhood closed after its last day of business Sunday, its owner said.

The owner, Tavistock Restaurants of California, said it was unsuccessful in negotiating a new lease at 284 Newbury St. and decided to close the location when its previous lease expired.

On its website, Charley’s describes itself as a “neighborhood favorite for traditional American classics” such as burgers, steaks, and fresh seafood.

Just over a year ago, Tavistock Restaurants acquired the Back Bay Restaurant Group, whose restaurant name-plates included Abe & Louie’s, Atlantic Fish Co., Joe’s American Bar & Grill, Charley’s, and Coach Grill.

There is a second Charley’s restaurant in Chestnut Hill, and that Charley’s will remain open for business, Tavistock said.

In a statement, Tavistock chief operations officer Bill Bartlett commented on the closing of the Charley’s in the Back Bay.

“We are sad to leave this historic building,” Bartlett said. “We knew we had only a year left on the Charley’s Newbury lease when we acquired the Back Bay Restaurant Group last year, and we had hoped to stay. We love Newbury Street. Unfortunately, we could not reach agreement on a new lease.”
