E Ink looks to bolster its position in LCD technology with licensing deal
E Ink Holdings of Taiwan, parent company of E Ink Corp. of Cambridge, is bolstering its position in liquid crystal display (LCD) technology through a 10-year patent licensing agreement with AU Optronics Corp. of Taiwan.
E Ink makes the low-power black-and-white screens found on popular e-book readers like Amazon.com’s Kindle.
E Ink also owns Hydis Techologies, a South Korean firm that makes the glowing full-color LCD screens found in tablet and laptop computers.
Under the deal, Hydis and AU will be free to incorporate each other’s technologies into their LCD products. Each company will also manufacture some screen components for the other.Hiawatha Bray can be reached at firstname.lastname@example.org.
