Sunday River, a resort area in Newry, Maine, said it opened Tuesday for the skiing and snowboarding season.
“Sunday River opened today with its T2 trail and Locke Mountain Triple chairlift for upper mountain access,” a Sunday River spokeswoman said in an e-mail Tuesday. “Temperatures did not allow for us to open top-to-bottom, but we are still making snow on those trails now and plan to open them tomorrow.”
In a statement, Sunday River president and general manager Dana Bullen said, “Thanks to our new energy-efficient snowguns, we’re able to make more snow on more trails by using less air than in years past.”
A Sunday River press release noted that the resort made a recent $1 million investment in its snow-making capacities.
Sunday River features skiing and snowboarding on eight interconnected mountain peaks. During the summer and fall months, visitors can partake of mountain biking and zipline tours as well as golf.
