Rick Daniels, the local president of the newspaper company that publishes the Patriot Ledger in Quincy, the Enterprise in Brockton, and Metrowest Daily News in Framingham, plans to resign at the end of the year.

Daniels joined Gatehouse Media New England in 2007. He had previously served as president of The Boston Globe, from 2001 to 2006.

A Gatehouse spokesman confirmed the move, first reported by the Ledger, but declined to provide additional details.

The Ledger reported that Daniels, who lives in Cohasset, plans to pursue investment and advisory roles for media companies.

The parent company, Gatehouse Media Inc. of Fairport, N.Y., is one of the nation’s largest publishers of local newspapers but has been weighed down by $1.3 billion in debt. The company owns 112 weekly and seven daily newspapers in New England, covering more than 100 communities in Eastern Massachusetts and Connecticut.
