Need a date? Head to Logan
Love is in the air at Logan -- especially during a snowstorm.
Boston’s often-maligned Logan International Airport has been named one of the top four airports in the country for making a romantic connection by the dating website MeetAtTheAirport.com. But the ranking isn’t about the airport’s buzzing nightlife or alluring atmosphere – neither of which actually exist there, as far as we know. It’s about lousy weather, and what some of the airport’s 29 million annual passengers do to keep themselves occupied while they wait for delayed flights
Which means if you’re in the mood for love and flying out of Boston Tuesday, you’re in luck. The forecast calls for up to 7 inches of snow, which is bound to lead to at least a few long layovers – and bored travelers looking for companionship.
There’s nothing like being stuck in an airport with nowhere to go and not much to do to fan the flames of flirtation. Airports also make a great spot for meeting people because they are so safe, said Steve Pasternack, the site’s chief executive, a former Wall Street commodities trader who also started the dating site sugardaddie.com.
“What other public place will do a fully-body search for weapons and check for several forms of ID before they let them through to meet you?” he said.
To become a member of MeetAtThe Airport.com, people enter in basic dating details: eye color, height, hobbies, as well as their nearest airport. When members book a trip, they enter the day and time and location of the flight, and the site connects them with travelers who have similar itineraries.
To compile the rankings, the website considered airport size, the number and quality of eating and drinking establishments, Yelp reviews, flight delays, and survey results from its 70,000 members.
Orlando International Airport, which has a Hyatt Regency located inside the main terminal with a flat $99 rate for daytime stays, topped the list of hookup-worthy airports. Miami came in second in part due to its large number international flights, widening the potential dating pool.
One in six departures from Logan were delayed last year, according to the aviation data site Flightstats.com, ranking Logan 14th among the top 35 North American airports in on-time departures. There have been 35 “love connections” at Logan, resulting in one marriage, since the MeetAtThe Airport.com began in late 2011, according to the website.
Boston is the third most popular city in terms of residents who belong to the site, and members at Logan log in to the site three times as often as the average user.
“We should be higher,” Matthew Brelis, spokesman for the Massachusetts Port Authority, which runs Logan, said of the airport’s ranking as the country’s fourth-hottest pickup joint. “New Englanders are well known for their ability to ignore the bad weather.”Katie Johnston can be reached at firstname.lastname@example.org.
