As the donut-eating public already knows, this is National Donut Day, and as a public service of sorts, Business Updates is reprising a post that advanced this red-letter day.
That post noted that Dunkin’ Donuts, the Canton-based coffee-and-baked-goods chain, plans to honor this day in high style.
In fact, Dunkin’ said its participating restaurants “will offer guests a free donut of their choice (while supplies last) with the purchase of any beverage.”
Meanwhile, the chain is also using the festive occasion of National Donut Day to spotlight one of its newest products --- a breakfast-style offering that exploits the versatility of the donut by transforming it into a sandwich delivery platform.
Here’s how Dunkin’ publicists described the Glazed Donut Breakfast Sandwich in a recent press release: “At only 360 calories, this unique sandwich features a fried egg and two slices of bacon between a sliced glazed donut, bringing together a classic bacon and eggs breakfast with the sweet taste of Dunkin’ Donuts’ beloved glazed donuts.”
On another note, the chain’s media advisory offered up this historical tidbit: “National Donut Day, celebrated on the first Friday of June each year, was originally established in 1938 by the Chicago Salvation Army to honor women who served donuts to soldiers during World War I.”
What started in Chicagoland has gone global --- at least, if Dunkin’ has anything to say about it --- Dunkin’ says it plans to celebrate National Donut Day in 31 countries this year.
