Sale of ‘I Love Lucy’ dress helps drive gains for Artfact, an online auction services firm

Check out the polka dot dress in the photo that accompanies this post. A beauty, eh? It was made famous by Lucille Ball in “I Love Lucy,” the ground-breaking sitcom from the early days of TV. Last month, that dress was sold by the auction house Profiles in History for $140,000.

Profiles in History is one of many such houses that is a customer of Artfact, a Boston-based company that designs platforms, software, and e-commerce applications for the online auction industry.

Thanks to splashy sales such as Lucy’s dress, Artfact said its July auction revenues increased by 142 percent on a year-to-year comparison basis. One reason why: The number of transactions that were conducted on Artfact platforms was up sharply from July 2012.
