There I was on a racetrack, barreling blindly into a 45-mile-per-hour, 90-degree corner that called for second gear. But I was still in fourth gear and going much faster than 45. This was my first time behind the wheel into Turn 11 at Laguna Seca raceway in Monterey, Calif., and I was caught by surprise. A wide gravel pit spread before the outside bend of the corner.
