Monopoly no more. When it hits showrooms in April, the Honda Insight will end Toyota's two-year reign as the only manufacturer of a dedicated hybrid model. Honda CEO Takeo Fukui looks like he's very excited to see that happen. (The first Insight, a two-seater with scant interior space, was dropped in 2006 after selling about 17,000 cars worldwide.)
With hybrids all the rage now, Honda bets it can sell 200,000 a year, half of that in the lucrative North American market. Powertrains and pricing haven't been announced, but expect to see similar hardware from the Civic Hybrid and a base price lower than the current $22,000 Prius.
