Debuts at the 2010 New York Auto Show
2011 Mazda 2Like most Ford/Mazda collaborations (the Escape/Tribute, Ranger/B-series), the Mazda version gets the automotive short straw. So its no surprise the new Mazda 2 subcompact, built on the Ford Fiesta platform, is a watered-down version of its American counterpart.
That means less aggressive styling outside, and less frills inside (no customizable instrument panel or superb voice recognition system). Opt for an automatic, and youll get an aging four-speed in the Mazda and a six-speed dual-clutch in the Ford. The engine is down on power, too.
Should it be written off? Absolutely not. The chassis and brakes are likely to impress, as Fords suspension tuning has been praised all over Europe. But even the $13,980 base price cant undercut the Fiesta. Maybe thats why its named 2.
