Debuts at the 2010 New York Auto Show
2011 BMW 5 SeriesThe latest BMW design language, first seen on the 2009 7 Series and Z4 roadster, tones down the controversial (yet successful) elements of recent years. The new 5 Series, when equipped with automatic parking, auto-braking, and night vision with pedestrian detection, now looks and feels like a smaller 7 Series.
The 550i gets the 7s smaller 4.4-liter twin-turbo V-8 to replace the current 4.8-liter unit. Its up on horsepower (now 400) and gas mileage (negligible), plus a new 8-speed automatic is standard. There are too many active technologies to list here. But despite all the electrical wizardry, BMW offers an old-school 6-speed manual at no extra cost.
