Boston Globe Top Drives for 2012
The 500 wins both the retro and cuteness awards this year. Its small, handles well, and is fun to drive. Power is adequate with the manual transmission, sluggish with the automatic. The multi-position top is actually more of a super-sized sunroof that retracts fully, leaving the roof siderails in place. The trunk isnt big, but you still can use the 5.4 cubic feet of space even when traveling with the top down.
But the cabrio is all about being stylish, maneuverable, and relatively economical. Should you need performance, Fiat is coming out with an Abarth edition of the 500 that packs 160 horsepower. The downside to Fiat is that you have to find a separate dealership (er, Studio) because Fiat didnt want to market the 500 through the Chrysler dealer network.
