Boston Globe Top Drives for 2012
Fords F-150, the countrys top-selling truck for 33 years, has seemingly endless combinations of trim levels, cabs, and beds, but the big news in its 2011 redesign was under the hood.
The base engine is a 3.7-liter V-6 (302 horsepower) with 5.0-liter and 6.2-liter V-8s also available. However, the gem in the lineup is the 3.5-liter twin-turbocharged EcoBoost that produces an impressive 365 horsepower and 420 lb.-ft of torque out of a small package (3.5 liters is only 213 cubic inches). All are coupled with a six-speed automatic transmission.
We were impressed with the EcoBoosts performance as well as the trucks interior finish, quietness, and refined (for a pickup truck) ride. Perhaps the most difficult decision is picking the right configuration for your needs or selecting one of the special editions like the King Ranch, Platinum, Harley-Davidson, or SVT Raptor. The go-anywhere, carry-most-anything abilities of this truck will take care of the rest.
