NEWPORT, R.I. (AP) — A stolen sport utility vehicle has been found abandoned on the rocky coastline next to Newport’s famed 40 Steps.
Newport police say the vehicle had been reported stolen by its owner Thursday and was found Friday morning on jagged rocks close to the sea. Police say they believe the SUV was pushed, and not driven, to the location by someone trying to push it into the water.
The vehicle was removed and returned to its owner Friday. Police say it was significantly damaged.
The 40 Steps enjoys a prominent site along Newport’s Cliff Walk. The stone stairs descend down a coastal cliff to offer dramatic views of the ocean near the city’s famed mansions. Police say the site was undamaged by the vehicle.
