The annual auto show in Detroit is one of the world’s largest. It opens to the public on Jan. 19, but the press preview began Jan. 14. Take a look at some of the cars from the show.

Ford is emphasizing fuel economy. The Atlas has shutters on the grille and wheels that close automatically, improving aerodynamics.

General Motors on Tuesday introduced the Cadillac ELR, which has the same battery and gas-powered generator as the Chevrolet Volt. Toyota unveiled a car that could become the blueprint for the 2014 model. It ditches the current Corolla’s soft, bland styling in favor of sharper lines, a dramatically sloped windshield and more aggressive headlights. Read more: Toyota hints at racier new Corolla design

Volkswagen unveiled the CrossBlue concept SUV Monday at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit. Volkswagen wouldn’t say whether the vehicle will be built, or when it might go on sale, but called it a ‘‘realistic glimpse of the future.’’ Read more: Volkswagen floats idea of new midsize SUV

The concept SUV is 9 inches shorter than the CR-V, and hidden rear door handles give it a smooth, coupe-like presence.
