Do not pump the brakes in a car with an anti-lock braking system. If you don’t have ABS, you should go back to the manual technique of braking and releasing.
“You want to pump the brake to the point where it briefly locks up, release it, then go back,” Cox said. “There’s a tempo that goes along with that. At higher speeds, it’s a slower pumping action. At slower speeds, it can be more light.
“Most people aren’t aggressive enough. They know to pump, but they don’t go to lock up or let go completely.”
