Hours after I appeared with Ernie Boch, Jr. and Harvard's Daniel Snow to discuss the Toyota recalls on WGBH Wednesday night , the Japanese company recalled an additional 1.1 million cars.

The new cars (2008-2010 Highlander, 2009-2010 Corolla, 2009-2010 Venza, 2009-2010 Matrix, and the Toyota-sourced 2009-2010 Pontiac Vibe) are part of the 4.26 million cars named under the first floor mat recall, in which the end of the gas pedal can become jammed to an improperly positioned mat. The second recall involves 2.3 million cars for a potential sticking of the the pedal mechanism.

This brings the total to 7.66 million Toyotas, not including cars sold in Europe that may also be recalled, according to the Associated Press.
