Don't stop for hamburgers in your new electric car.

The People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals want to zap electric car owners with ads touting vegan lifestyles and green-colored chickens as they plug into the city's first public charging stations next year.

In an e-mail this morning to Jim Hunt, the city's chief of environmental and energy services, PETA executive vice president Tracy Reiman said that promoting electric cars "is a commendable effort, but we hope people will take going green a step further by going vegan."

Neither PETA nor the city has responded to e-mails this morning. The city plans to install three stations on Cambridge Street by City Hall Plaza in the first quarter next year, as part of a broader effort to reduce Boston's greenhouse gas emissions 25 percent by 2020 and support upcoming electric cars cars from Nissan, Chevrolet, and Ford.

PETA did not say what they would pay for the ads.

Update: PETA e-mailed back and said that more cities will be contacted. Or else the chicken gets it.
