Child poverty steady in city
Boston rises to 13th among major districts
While many big cities have managed to cut down on the number of school-age children living in poverty, Boston has risen from 29th to 13th among the nation's poorest school districts, largely because its child poverty rate has remained the same, according to data released by the US Census Bureau yesterday.

Welfare plunged in '90s while poverty persisted
The number of US households on public assistance dropped by nearly half in the 1990s, according to 2000 Census results released yesterday, spurred by new limits on welfare benefits and a long economic recovery.
