I miss my late-night friends

Posted by Joe Allen-Black November 22, 2011 09:19 AM

I went to bed the other day at about 10:30 p.m. I say "about" because it was somewhere around halfway through a mindless reality television show, so I'm not exactly sure when I dosed.

Oh, skyline, how I do I love thee? Let me count the ways.

For some reason, I've always been enamored by city skylines. Mountains and rolling hills can be breathtaking, but city skylines create an amazing energy that trees can never match for me.

Finding a reason for the fall season

Posted by Joe Allen-Black October 1, 2011 05:29 PM

I've never been a big fan of autumn. Growing up, it meant the time to start football practice, and all I remember about that is running laps, sweating, grunting, and drinking water from a dirty hose. I just wanted it to be over. Unfortunately, I've carried that bias against this season for years.

Count our blessings after Irene

I took my safety in the first few hurricanes I lived through in Florida for granted. After 2004, I never will again. I hope after the problems this week, no one around here will, either.

Take me out the ballgame. Take me out to Fenway

I grew up in a family of Detroit Tigers fans. Every opening day, we would go down to the stadium, I'd get a bag of popcorn and a hot dog, and we'd all watch the game.

That's it? That's Plymouth Rock?

Posted by Joe Allen-Black August 15, 2011 08:27 PM

I wish I hadn't built up Plymouth Rock to be more than it was. But after decades of talking about it while tracing my hand into a turkey for Thanksgiving, I was expecting something grand.

Eating crow with my hot dog

I finally give the New England-style hot dog bun a chance. And, ya'know what? It's pretty awesome.

Candlepin bowling intrigues me, and I embrace calling a drinking fountain a "bubbler." But really? A different style of hot dog bun?

Home is where the sweet tea and humidity are

Posted by Joe Allen-Black July 13, 2011 03:24 PM

I got the opportunity to head out of the area for July 4 and make my way to the hills of North Carolina. As much as I love my home here in New England, it felt nice to spend some time in the South. Nothing says home like hearing "y'all."

Thank you for the surprise

New Englanders love New England, and they love to tell you why. It's an endearing quality that that amazes me every time I encounter it.

In a tourist trap

Posted by Joe Allen-Black June 24, 2011 10:07 AM

I'm kind of in a rut with my tour-guide skills here in Boston.

Every time an out-of-town relative or friend comes to visit us in Boston, my husband and I have done largely the same routine of showing off the city. The path -- starting with drinks in the Back Bay and ending with pastries in the North End -- has worked well.

My, what big trains you have

Posted by Joe Allen-Black June 13, 2011 10:10 AM

I expected to get confused and turned around when I moved to a new part of the country. I just didn't expect that I would be so pathetic in the very first hour.
