Digging up the street, and downtown slowdowns

Hello again, and welcome to another work-week. Almost time for back-to-school, which means that traffic will start to skyrocket. (Yes, believe it or not, we've been in the slow season. With all the construction out and about, though, it's certainly not felt as such.)

Enjoy the relative lack of slowdowns until then.

Today I have a more Boston-centric post than most. I've, of course, got the usual Monday installment of downtown area construction, and I've also got an answer to a reader question about some utility work that's keeping traffic pretty slow in a very busy student area.

It's electric

Reader thisisdumb09 asked me for some more details on a construction project that's made traveling through Allston a bit of a problem. Being a local resident, I can attest to the fact that, at the very least, it's made for some very interesting gawking from the B line by Packard's Corner.

Anywho, NStar crews have been ripping up parts of Commonwealth Avenue, Brighton Avenue and Cambridge Street for over a week. I asked Mike Durand at NStar what they were doing, and he offered me this explanation:

We're working on a major electrical upgrade in the area that runs roughly between Stop & Shop and Star Market. Our work includes installing two new manholes, five new underground transformers 2,100 feet of new conduit and 10,000 feet of new electrical cable.

Mike says everything should be wrapped up by the end of September.

You'll find slowdowns here... (Downtown Boston edition)
