Such an awful list.

Aside from me agreeing with The Thing as number 1, the list spirals out of control from there.  No Blair Witch Project, yet you have the sequel? No Ringu but you have the remake? And probably the biggest crime ever, no Descent or High Tension or Martyrs.

At least you put Audition on the list.

"The Omen" doesn't make the list?  How about the original "Friday the 13th?"

Glad they included "Sesson 9" and "Salem's Lot" but they should be higher up. I think this list was recycled because it mentions that "Hollywood is working on a remake..." of the movie [REC] called "Quarantine" but that came out already

Quarantine is the remake to [REC] and [REC] is on the list. What shouldn't be on list is Cloverfield

The Haunting (or Haunting of Hill House) from 1963
The hand holding scene is very scary

Seriously, what horror movie buff made this AWFUL list? I agree with the other posters. Where is Friday the 13th, High Tension, The Descent, The Omen or Martyrs? Not to mention Fontiers(s), Inside, Calvaire, Hostel, The Last House on the Left, The Hills Have Eyes? I mean COME ON - The Wicker Man, Cloverfield, Mothman Prophecies???!!!

Yeah, much like any list, there are some bad choices and a few "glad you included that" selections. Horror is such a subjective taste though.

For example, I have never been scared of the 'alien' or 'body snatcher' type genre, and I love the gore of zombie movies, but can never find them "scary" really... 28 Days is an exception, given the heightened viciousness and quickness.

Even though I admit a lack of fear in the alien/sci-fi genre, I agree with the inclusion and high placement of The Thing. At the very least, it's one of the most unsettling movies of all time. ("I realize we've all been through alot here. But if it's at all possible, I'd really rather not spend the rest of this winter TIED TO THIS F#%ING COUCH!!" Beautiful line!) Plenty of shock value to go with the stomach-churning.

For my money, I'll take Halloween any day. I can't believe it's original cinematic parent, Black Christmas, wasn't included, but oh well.....

Extremely glad to see The Changeling make the list. This is the greatest of all the lesser-known ones that people REALLY need to see. A complete gem! George C. Scott is one of our finest actors ever and gives a stellar performance, as always. The fact that they were able to tab the likes of him for this film speaks volumes for its obvious quality and sure-fire script. To me, it's still the classic "haunting" movie. No better ghost story on film. The mansion is its own leading character, the music is simply perfect and eerie -- one of the highlights to the tension. The seance scene, the bathtub scene(s), and of course -- OH MY GOD -- the ball scene. This movie MUST be seen by any horror fan!

And BTW, if you're going to include Jesus Camp, at least put it where it belongs... #1!!

Alright... We all agree the list sucked. But what can you do? I think someone should post a real list of the 50 scariest movies of all time... Or at least 50 movies that don't blow like a hurricane, that are at least in the horror genere. Call to arms movie fans, let's see YOUR top 50 lists. Or whatever you got, doesn't have to be 50.

Yeah, I think this is a pretty awful list too.
Not sure which is the bigger travesty, the Exorcist being way down at #14 (it's my all time #1 and still shows up in an occasional nightmare), or Cloverfield being on the list at all.

"Scary" is subjective, and "Scariest" a matter of opinion.

However, it is an incontrovertible truth that the first Evil Dead movie is FAR scarier than Evil Dead II.
E.D. II is one of my favorite movies of all time - I've watched it probably a hundred times.
I love it because of it's slap-stick approach to horror - it scared me the first time or two, but I keep coming back to it for the laughs.
Evil Dead the first, on the other hand, is just plain disturbing and terrifying, which is why I can't bear to watch it anywhere near as often as II.

And finally, Eraserhead is, without a doubt, the most psychologically disturbing film I've ever seen.  I did not, however, find it "scary" in a horror film sort of way.

Sorry dudes, the Exorcist is still the number one scariest movies of all time. Also the list leaves off several good choices including:   The Legend of Hell House.
                                                    The Birds
                                                    The original Thing
                                                    The original Mummy
The Abominable Dr. Phibes or just about
                                                     anything starring Vincent Price

Wow, hard to believe you left out the #1 scariest movie of all time- Psycho by Alfred Hitchcock.  Millions of people did not take a shower for years after watching this movie, or kept the shower curtain open if they did.  For pure suspense and shock value, nothing beats Hitchcock!

I can't believe "The Hitcher" with Rutger Hauer isn't there! That movie was intense.  But I will totally forgive you for omitting that one since you so rightly (and humorously) included "Jesus Camp".  Scariest thing ever!

How could anyone in their right mind not include an Alfred Hitchcock movie in this list?  If "Psycho" isn't scary then I don't know what is.  I'd be willing to bet that all the directors on this list studied Hitchcock's movies for hours and used his techniques.  He should be #1, hands down.  Just my two rupees...;>)

Not a single Hitchcock film? Huh?  I guess we must split hairs over genre semantics: suspense or horror.  Where is David Bordwell when you need him?

There MUST be a category for what our esteemed critics left out:

Let The Right One In (2008)
Antichrist (2009/Lars Von Trier) - coming soon
Repulsion (1967)
Twenty-Nine Palms (2005/the Bruno Dumont-French film) - the last half hour will keep you up for years.

I'll be back for more.  I'

My top 3 scariest:
1. Psycho
2. The Shining
3. Night of the Living Dead (the original).
(Defining scary as suspensful and fear-inducing, not as gross and bloody).

Maybe I'm just old-fashioned, but Alfred Hitchcock's "The Birds" and Psycho still rank as among the scariest, probably because they seemed so downright possible.

The probability that I would be in space to be terrorized by an alien or that an alien would land here on earth to terrorize me seems highly unlikely. But that the crows sitting outside on the telephone wire might come together and turn on me seemed very possible. I still get nervous on that overpass by the SE Expressway where all the birds hang out. And Anthony Perkins seemed a real possibility as well - a closed shower curtain can still freak me out.
