I remember when the ROCK of Boston would play the Beastie Boys and I would call and yell at them...Good Times.

The in station produced bits --- it was like no other.

The lunch time songs (Tom Sandman's creativity)
The live concerts
The interviews
The 5 O'Clock comedy (Mark's creativity)
The Rock n Roll rumble
Nocternal Omissions
The Fools Parade
Lick Me
Mishegoss (Charle's team's creativity)
The BCN Van
Tami Heidie
Carter Alan & U2
All the bands thanking BCN at every f'n concert

the list goes on....but the Rock of Boston does not...

Probably one of the best April Fool's jokes I have ever heard was years ago when WBCN did a 'live" broadcast from the "Fenway 500".  The DJ did his ficticious report from the "1st annual" NASCAR race at Fenway, all the while they played race car sound effects in the background.  Dozens of people actually showed up at Fenway looking to get in!

The station hasn't been the same since they were bought out by Infinity but I'll still miss them.

I still think back to when they simply played 'good' music- whether it was old, new, national, or local. That's when the station was last relevent. For the last 10 years or so they've just been regurgitating the same old playlist it seems.

But thank you old BCN for Dwayne Ingalls Glasscock, introducing me to the Fools, and making me laugh during mishigas (however you spell that).

Heartbroken...and angry.

Every memory, every summer, every car ride, my shower radio, my alarm clock radio.  It's been BCN since I was a kid.  The soundtrack to my life.  I hope your sportstalk station is an epic fail.

Ok, I'm going to date myself here but I've been listening to 'BCN since before they had an actual format and you might hear just about anything from the Beatles to Coltrane to Beethoven.  As they progressed toward a more rock oriented format, I actually heard Charles say, "I'm going to put on side two of Electric Ladyland and go out and get a sub."  Then, I worked there as a news intern before I got my first newspaper job.  It was a transitional time.  Award winners like Danny Schechter the News Dissector had left, but the news department, with dedicated folks like Dinah Vaprin and Katy Abel, was still doing about 10 newscasts a day.  The station started going downhill when Oedipus became the PD.  He killed the news department in his quest for a younger demographic, and the station has been going downhill ever since, in my humble opinion.  While I didn’t listen much anymore, except on weekends when the format loosened up a bit, I still feel a pang in my heart to know it won’t be there.

I've probably listened to about 3 minutes of WBCN since Howard left.  It was pretty unlistenable, as is WAAF, WZLX.

Many memories.  Saturday morning with Duane Ingalss Glasscock(Chuck L's alter ego), five o'clock comedy segment, but the best?  the many live broadcasts: U2(they ran out of songs to play so they repeated 11 o'clock tick tock), the Police, the Jam at the Paradise to start.

Charles LaLaquidera, Ken Shelton, Oedipus, Mark Parenteau, Dwayne Ingalls Glasscock - the very best of Boston!  WBCN rocked!  It was the soundtrack of our lives.  So sad to see it's demise.

I haven't lived in the Boston area since late 1986 (I try to get back there on an annual basis), but WBCN was a staple of my post-high school existence there. As someone previously posted, whither Duane Ingalls Glasscock? I especially remember the dialogues between the host of the morning show and his foil. "Solid, Duane." "OK, Charles." And Mark Parenteau's 5:00 Smoking Lamp always gets blank and/or unknowing stares from the locals here in Northern CA whenever I go to my watering hole and refer to said Lamp on Friday late-afternoons. Now I see that 'BCN is going away; that's certainly a sad development. And for what? MORE sports talk?!? I thought that WEEI 850 AM had that format covered in the Boston radio market.

I will always have fond memories of WBCN and there support for U2 back in the day when both were at there peak. Carter Allen really helped those guys.

Nocturnal Emissions was also good for hearing some off beat stuff that would never be played on regular radio.

Thanks for some fun times 'bcn!

sad.
many great comments above! radio soundtrack for many of us growing up in the Bean in the late 60's, 70's and early 80's. It's been a long time since Mark P would light the smoking lamp on Friday's at 5:00pm. The Big Mattress was great every morning! New music debuts, deeper tracks, new local artists that you can only get on satelite now unless some national radio programming company has the artist pegged and commercially packaged as the next big thing a la GNR (sad, sad, sad). Sat am's with DIG! (Duane Ingalls Glasscock); "how cold is it this morning Duane?" "it's so cold my bong water froze!". Been a long time since Nocturnal Emisions was followed up by Boston Emissions and then either Dr. Dimento or the King Biscuit Flower Hour, or both. Robin Lane & the Chartbusters, the Cars, Duke & the Drivers, Schemers, Private Lightning, Down Avenue...well per Charles; if the creek don't rise, and there ain't no meltdown, and the good Lord is willing....oh, we can't do it again next week - we'll see you on the Web; doesn't sound right. Thanks BCN (the real BCN) for everything. When you were good, you were very good!
