With ownership in local restaurants changing so frequently, it's tough to give a comprehensive list. And some of the best places have closed down or renamed themselves. So, here is a little list of what I've seen and love in local sushi...

Fugyaku - HIGH price, great, absolutely great fish

Shino Express - SERIOUSLY. It's clean, fresh fish. BU taste at a UMass budget (and they have a new store going up in Somerville)

Ginza - 'nuf said

That place over by the Chestnut Hill Mall. It's also pricey and only seats about four people at a time, but it's top notch

And right off 128 in Waltham next to Bertucci's is a great sushi place with chefs that prepare stuff any way you like

I have never been much of a Fugaku fan... it just feels a bit like a mass-production sushi trough... I would much rather head to Ginza Chinatown where it may not be pretty but the product is superb. The new Haru at prudential has surprised me with affordable quality... I was expecting it to be awful!

Oishi is hands-down the best quality but the prices move it to #3 for me - definitely a good idea if you have the cash, though!!

Douzo is too full of wanna-be's to have a good time. They DO have great sushi but most likely the only thing being discussed at your neighbor's table will be this season's Gucci accessories. No thanks.

A recently discovered gem.....

Toraya on Mass Ave in Arlington. It's easy to miss as you're driving by (it's across from the high school) and it's teeny, but I was really impressed with the sushi. I am usually a big fan of Fugakyu, but since I no longer live close by, Toraya is now a fave.

Fugakyu is superb, but you don't need to spend nearly that much to get good sushi. Here are my favorite sushi joints. (Disclaimer: I am completely intolerant of non-fresh fish.)

Suishaya in Chinatown -- a very good Japanese/Korean restaurant. I used to go here a lot when I lived in Fort Point.

Cafe Sushi on Mass Ave, between Central and Harvard Sq, Cambridge -- my current standard sushi outfitter. Cafe Sushi has served me both the best mackerel and the best sea bass I have ever had.

Kotobukiya Sushi Bar, Porter Sq Exchange, Cambridge -- Cheap, quick, good. I eat it if I'm there, and I'm not already eating bibimbap at Chocho's.

And I have to mention New Deal Fish Market, on Cambridge St in Cambridge. I mostly make my own sushi these days, because I found where to get the best fish. I cannot praise this fish market highly enough; for quality, price and service they stand alone. Daily, there are three or more fishes suitable for sashimi, but unlike Japanese markets, you're not paying $36/lb for tiny cuts of stale tuna. (I'm looking at you, Kotobukiya Market.) As a bonus, New Deal sells many Japanese and Portuguese goods as well.

Reasonable Price: Definitely Shino Express on Newbury Street is one of the best places for sushi in Boston. It is hard to believe that on Newbury Street you would find great sushi for a decent price. Also consider Blue Fin in Porter Exchange (on Mass. Ave. Cambridge). This place is located in the closest thing to a Japantown in the Boston area. Reasonable prices and great sushi.

Gourmet: Definitely Oishi 3 in the South End. Hands down the best high end sushi in the city! Expensive, but worth the price. It is the place where my wife and I celebrate her birthday once a year. From the same people there is also the original Oishi in Chestnut Hill, which is also amazing, but a very different type of experience.

Best sushi in Boston is Samurai in the Back Bay (across from the Prudential)

Good prices for the freshest of fish. The Sushi Boat for 2 is enough to feed 4 people.

Shilla Restaurant in Harvard Square. It's kind of hard to find, but its downstairs in the basement of the building that Staples, and Wagamama is in. Shilla's been a favorite sushi place of mine for as long as I can remember. It is authentic Korean and Japanese food... and the sushi man is pretty cool too. Ask for the dragon maki mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm

Ma Soba on Cambridge Street (Boston) is very good. The rolls are creative and not very expensive.

All Seasons Table in Malden is the best sushi is the entire Boston area. The quality is extremely high, and they have daily specials ranging for super white tuna to live uni. They strive to get the best quality fish available, whether it comes from Calfiornia or Japan. It is also well priced for the amount and quality of food.

Oishi in Chestnut Hill, and now will a second location, would certainly be #2. There prices are ridiculous though, and getting a table in the smaller location is challenging.

Fugakyu in Brookline is my #3. They almost always offer fresh fish, although sometimes the salmon tastes a little too fishy.

Wow, I am shocked that Tsunami in Brookline wasn't on the list. A small space, super affordable, but outstanding sushi. The spicy tuna is the best I've had!

Sato in Waltham right next to 128! They are amazzing. The prices are very fair and what you get is amazing. I go atleast once a week and the people that work there are awesome. Their other food is incredible as well. Plus they have a bunch of TV's so i can go when a game is on. I cannot talk enough about SATO in Waltham.

Fugakyu in Brookline is the best. I love it.Cool
We're all interconnected spiritually like cogwheels of nature. If we only serve ourselves instead of interconnecting in mutual understanding with others, nature will stop functioning properly. Kabbalah teaches us how to reach this interconnectedness.
