Personally I believe that it is up to each individual to come up with a list of this sort. No institution, no matter how knowledgable, can accurately list "the best" of anything. There will always be dissension and disagreement. I have been a fan of Sci-Fi from an early age and have even watched or seen every single show on this list. I remember watching the premier of "Outer Limits".

Having said that I would like to point out that, in my opinion, fully 10 out of the 50 don't even belong on this list as they aren't even Sci-Fi. With the exception of "Greatest American Hero" no super-hero show should be on this list. That includes Batman, Superman (et al) & Wonder Woman. These shows are Action/Dramas (in Batman's case it would be an Action/Comedy) and might be more correctly listed as fantasy rather than Sci-Fi. The same may be said for "Wild, Wild West", and "The Man From UNCLE" and "Xena" is just pure fantasy.

So before you start making a list I think you should first get your categories right.

I have no problem with the order, once again I think that it is subjective. I have my favorites and you have your favorites. Each would list them differently. I do have a problem with some shows not even making the list. Predominantly would be the show "Farscape". Then what about "Heroes" and "Time Tunnel"? You can't please all the people all the time.

Very entertaining list and although I don't agree with the order, the content is pretty much on target with one GLARING exception. How could you leave off Farscape?

I must agree with bardgareth that shows such as Avengers, Batman, Buffy, Man from UNCLE, Superman, Tales from the Crypt, Wild Wild West, Wonder Woman, and Xena, aren't sci fi shows although I enjoyed many of them.

I would have added Capt. Video, Dark Angel, Farscape, Heroes, Lexx, Panet of the Apes, Space Above & Beyond, Space Patrol, Time Tunnel, and UFO in their stead.

First, I have to say that there is an error. The listing for Babylon 5 actually contains a picture of Legend of the Rangers (a B5 spin-off).

I wish to agree with the others that Farscape is an oversight.

But I do disagree with the previous commenters about Superman, Batman and The Wild Wild West. Those show are with out a doubt science fiction.

Though Batman and Superman are super heroes, they are sub-genre of Sci-fi. (though Wonder Woman is based in Fantasy) Superman is an alien and batman is about the tech. Same with Wild Wild West, that show is all about the technology.

Recce1: Dark Angel is on the list

I have read tons of science fiction books and watched lots of science fiction movies.

I would have trouble coming up with 50 "good" science fiction TV shows.

If you really love science fiction , read books by Robert Heinlien,Frank Herbert, Arthur C. Clarke,Isaac Asimov,Philip Jose Farmer, etc.

The only Science Fiction on TV that has ever really impressed me was Star Trek and Twilight Zone. X-Files also ( if you consider thst Science fiction)

Shows like Land of the Giants and Lost in Space were just kind of goofy. But I seem to recall Time Tunnel wasn't half bad. The Sarah Connor Chroncles is not bad either, although some episodes are kind of weak.

While I agree no list will ever be perfect and sci-fi nerds will forever debate a subject like this. I still have to say this list is put together poorly.
1. The list didn't stick to it's genre. While several shows can be debated as sci-fi such as batman, wild wild west and even Buffy to a point(It had a few robots in it. Shoot it's every sci-fi nerd's dream to have a fembot). But who would ever mistake Xena as science fiction? If they had to include those the list should have been the top 50 fantasy/science fiction shows. Though the pairing up of fantasy and sci-fi as one category has always been annoying to me. Don't get me wrong I like both genres but they shouldn't always be paired up

2. Glaring omissions where is the twilight zone and farscape?

3. This last one is just annoying. They couldn't even get a proper picture for Babylon 5. They used a picture from a potential spin off series. A picture from Crusade would have been beter at least it got through half a season and had a few episodes on or around Babylon 5. Just thought but maybe using Google to find your pictures isn't the best way to go.

I don't want to be critical or anything but it seems like little effort was put into this list.

I agree with the comments from those who refer to certain of these series as not even being Sci-Fi.

You're confusing Action/Adventure, Action/Comedy, Fantasy, Suspense, etc, with Science-Fiction.

By-the-way, in the sixties, there was a short-lived TV series called "The Immortal" starring Christopher George. One or two seasons only, approximately 1966-1969.

Anyone out there remember it?
Any opinions on where it should place in the top 50?

Bettor.

Farscape??? Hello, how could you possibly leave it off and put Sliders on. I mean, really now. Someone needs to do their homework a bit better. Sheesh.

SciFi channel if want higher ratings rerun some of the older classics we miss them and would love to watch them again. This new stuff your putting out has better special effects but the story line is weak most of the time.
You could remake
Time Tunnel or The Invaders ...come on these were great shows.

I agree the SciFi channel is horrible. Too many no name movies with no name actors and boring stories.

I would also like to see them rerun some of the good old movies and shows.

While this list certainly has some classics, and some of the best Sc-Fi of all time, it's mostly the ORDER of things that bothers me. "Sliders" is lower (better) than "Firefly????" What? And since when is "Xena Warrior Princess" Sci-Fi? I can understand why "Lost" made it in, since it has science-fiction elements as well as supernatural elements. I would have rated it in the single digit realm, though.

I really wish they'd stuck to a more rigid interpretation of Science Fiction, since this would have opened up the top end of the list to some fairly decent shows that didn't make this overly broad list. Shows like "Roswell" and "Smallville." Yeah, yeah. Maybe they're not absolutely top-notch (though I personally would put Smallville in the top 20), but COME ON! They're WAY better than "Sliders" or "The Greatest American Hero!"

There ARE a couple of things I agree with, such as putting Star Trek as one of the absolute best ( I think very few shows have had the far-reaching influence that one garnered). I also agree with Battlestar Galactica as the best of all time. I have never encountered a science fiction show before with as much depth of characters and storyline. It truly IS one of a kind.

And did anyone see "Heroes" in this list? If "Lost" made it, then where's "Heroes?" Some things about this list just make no sense. It seems almost like they drew shows out of a hat and matched them with a random number from 1-50.

Ugh. Well, at least it was an enjoyable stroll down memory lane.

EDIT/ADDENDUM #1: I think that what really happened with this list is that it was composed by people who actually care little or nothing about science-fiction. They did a little "research," and printed their results. I can't even blame them, actually, since they were undoubtedly assigned the task. But I think it would have been a far superior list if some true science-fiction officianadoes <sp? /> were consulted.

EDIT/ADDENDUM #2: To the folks that say "Superman" and "Batman" are not science fiction (and by extension, shows that didn't make the cut like "Smallville"), I must state my wholehearted disagreement. Regarding Superman, you can't get much more sc-fi than an alien visitor living amongst us who possesses inhuman powers. You could certainly argue the value of such a plot as "hard" science fiction, but in the general category of science fiction it does fit. Batman I'm less sure about. I certainly think of it as such. But some folks might not think of science-fictiony gagetry as qualification for being Sci-Fi. So I guess that one's arguable.

Space Above and Beyond should have made the cut.

How many of these shows has Fox cancelled over the years? Too many, probably.

Whoever put this list together needs to seriously re-examine their definition of "Science Fiction." Superhero's do not qualify (Batman, Wonder Woman, Superman). And "Fantasy" is different from "Science Fiction" (no Xena, no Buffy). And Macabre / Horror is also different from "Science Fiction" (Tales Crypt). Just because something is weird / different / fiction does not mean that it qualifies as "Science-Fiction" And really, Buck Rogers at #47?? Please, Willma Deering puts that series in the Top 10 all by herself. Lastly, putting the modern BSG above either Star Trek TNG or TOS is just SCI-FI blasphemy.

If you have BSG as #1, than you have to have Deep Space Nine as #2, since so many of its themes, dynamics, and plot points (and WRITERS) are the same. Not listing DS9 at all is a crime.

Also: The Prisoner, Farscape, and (if we're going to include horror for some reason) Karloff's Thriller

how about BLAKE'S 7 -- the show is PEERLESS but clearly too controversial for American tv. AND THE PRISONER isn't on the list! for shame!
