Well, this doesn't qualify as a store closing or brand evaporation, but it made me think about how I have desperately missed the French fries from McDonald's that they cooked in animal fat.  You could smell those babies for miles, and you just had to stop for them.  Now, they're soft and tasteless.  It's not like they're health food now for pity's sake - they are FRENCH FRIES.  If you want a decadant treat, may as well be the real thing, right?  I can't remember what year they changed them, but it was a tragedy...sometime in the 80s, I think.

I'd say the thing I miss most from McD's were the fried apple/cherry pies.  The baked ones just aren't the same.

I miss Lechmere's, and Bradlee's, but most of all I miss Filene's.  They were so much better than Macy's.  I used to shop in Chestnut Hill, but Bloomingdale's just does not cut it for me, and neither does Macy's.  I will miss the super Filene's Basement store in Boston where I used to get my husband's and my son's suits with name brands at great prices.  The salesmen there were so helpful.  And we all know that the other Basement stores are good, but not like the original basement downtown, with the automatic markdowns.

Carter's in Needham.  For years I didn't know where to go for underwear, children's clothes and socks after they closed!  They were the best.

Lechmere Sales as has already been mentioned.

Steve's Ice Cream.  Whatever happened to them?  They expanded from a single Davis Square store to a regional chain, then a national one, then suddenly they were all gone.   The very last one I knew of, at Quincy Market, changed its name to Sprinkles a couple years ago.

Bailey's Ice Cream, with those lovely deep metal cups and real silverware.

Brigham's isn't entirely dead but they are no longer nearly as ubiquitous as they once were -- locations in Central, Harvard, Porter, and Davis squares are all gone.

Lechmere, as already mentioned by many other folks.
Filene's Basement, as already mentioned by other folks.

Tower Records.

WordsWorth Books in Harvard Square.
Waterstone's Bookstore.
Avenue Victor Hugo Bookstore.
100 Flowers Bookstore (1970s, Central Square, Cambridge)

President's Choice store brand products at the old Star Market, before they merged with Shaw's.

I hope we don't have to add The Boston Globe to this list on Friday.

Moxie.  Technically it still exists, but if you are old enough to have tasted it before it was reformulated you know it's nothing like the original.  An acquired taste to be sure, but truly unique.
