Do you take a good look at the receipt for every purchase you make, just to make sure you were charged correctly? Or do your receipts just head straight for the trash?

If you scour your receipts, how often do you find instances where you were charged incorrectly?

I not so much check my receipts, but watch the prices as each item is rung up.  When an incorrect price comes up, it's easier to address the problem before any money has changed hands.  Honestly most stores I frequent are pretty good with pricing, except for CVS and Joann Fabrics.  CVS has a problem with sale prices not being in the computer.  Joann Fabrics has a lot of confusing signage and clearance items usually ring up full price.

Now restaurant receipts... those I check.  I'm always finding drinks and desserts I never ordered on those.

I notice it a lot at Stop and Shop.

Yes, I always look at a receipt after checkout to make sure each item cost what I expected it to. I often buy things on sale and from the scratch-and-dent rack.  For my part, being overcharged on an item is rare, and getting a refund for the difference isn't too much of a hassle. Making stores price everything seems superfluous when people can easily check their own receipts and spot mistakes.

I notice it not at the regular check out, with a cashier at the helm, but in the self-checkout. The self-checkout invariable does not record sale prices, but, fortunately, the Super Stop & Shop I frequent in a neighboring town has plenty of customer service people available to help.

BTW - Those scanners in some stores, in which you can check for prices before going to the cashier? The scanners usually don't work. Yes, I'm speaking to you, CVS and Target.

All I can say is, let the buyer beware, I've had it happen a few times at CVS, once or twice at Stop and Shop, and a few times at Home Depot.  Wal-Mart is actually pretty good in my opinion, sometimes the check-out clerk will scan things twice so you have to watch them carefully.  I don't think they do it on purpose, people are people, not perfect.

CVS has by far the most complaints, which leads me to believe that they do it on purpose.  And if one mega-retailer does it, who's to say more don't.

Same thing with restaurants, watch your bill, pay close attention for extras like sauce, rolls, extra plate.  Also, mistakes happen too, servers are human, when you are in a hurry stuff happens.

It's your money, pay atttention, no one else is going to look out for you!

Target is HORRIBLE with their pricing!  I have errors almost everytime I shop there.  The state could make a nice chunk of change by investigating them.  They don't rotate their stock very well and you can find multiple prices of the same items on the shelf and a different price on the sign.  And if you don't notice until you get home, too bad because they are ridiculously difficult to deal with over the phone and make you come back for a credit; even though they have all the info in their computer.  Their mistakes combined with their constant price increases have made me start to shop elsewhere.

so the state reaps the rewards of the fines, while the consumers are out the $$ if they don't happen to notice the mistake..........Nice..........

I have found so many errors upon scanning my Shaws (and previously Star Market) receipts once I'm home, that now I try to look at them before I leave the store, so I can stand on line at Customer Service to get my refunds immediately instead of having to come back again.  Just recently, I didn't look at my Stop & Shop receipt until I got home -- I had only bought a few items, but I was charged for two gallons of milk when I only bought one (how does that happen? Perhaps it was because the cashier was talking as she was scanning items).  I've been carrying that receipt around in my purse for almost a month until it is convenient for me to get back to that particular store location again so I can get my $2.49 refunded.  At CVS, you must ALWAYS have the weekly sale flier with you, to prove to the cashier that the items being rung up at full price are, in fact, on sale.

Watch out for Sears also.
There seems to be mass confusion at check out and sales prices don't always come up correctly.

Of course I do.  The first battle many times is finding the price of an item.  Many times the items are not labeled and there is no shelf tag to be found.  Fun.  If it is a sale item, I make sure I have a copy of the flyer with me (this has come in very handy on more than one occasion!).  Next, I watch as each item is scanned.  If it doesn't show the expected price, I stop them right there.  Holding up the line gives the clerk a sense of urgency to resolve the issue quickly and quietly plus it gives you the option of just walking away (why wait in 2 lines needlessly? It is their fault, not yours!)  Last, I double check the receipt just to make sure  I have what I came for, nothing more, and at the price I expected.

HOME DEPOT - Years on - Does Not Provide Up-To-Date Pricing On Stock Items.

Simple Rule:  When stocking/restocking, ALWAYS ensure new pricing label is

attached to correct shelf location, eh?

Having found so many mistakes, I always stop for a few minutes to check my receipts before I leave the grocery store - or any store for that matter. It is so much easier to correct it there and then instead of having to go back. Sales prices are not rung up correctly, items are rung up twice, skew (sp?) numbers are entered incorrectly. I try to follow the screen, when they are entered, but sometimes it is just not possible.
Further more, I always seek out - if possible - a mature cashier, even if I have to wait in line. They are a lot more reliable than the gum chewing, yakking high school kid cross talking to another kid at the next register - even a few ones over, that is more interested in "what is happening tonight" than customer service.
How do these store get away with hiring such incompetent people? In my service business, I would not have lasted very long.

As a note. I just shopped at BB&B yesterday. I had a 20% coupon. Instead of deducting it - the cashier ADDED the 20%. How it happened, you tell me. It took me 20 minutes of my time to correct it. And no apologies. What kind of stogies are they hiring?

I refuse to go to Stop and Shop anymore because everytime I did, there were mistakes. I specifically noticed it everytime on the 12packs of soda. They'd say they were 4/$10 which is a great deal, but ring up at 3/$10, stuff like that.

CVS is by far the worst. You do always need a flier with you to prove it is on sale. The worst ones are the buy one get one free items. One example, I was buying my vitamin c and I grabbed 2 for the buy one get one. They both rang up full price.

I worked in a grocery store years ago and each week I had to manually key price changes into the computer so when the new sale started, items would ring up at the right prices. It is like CVS advertises stuff on sale, never keys in the sale price, and figues people will buy the sale stuff in bulk, not realize it rang up wrong til it was too late, and then maybe not go back for the money? It is soo annoying and I wish they would get fined or shut down.

Everyone should call Mike DeAngelis at CVS to complain.

Mike DeAngelis. That's the name, and the man who can take care of the CVS problems.
