Are you making less money?
Talk about money issues affecting you
Are you making less compared to a year ago? If yes, how much less? And how long to you expect your reduced earnings to last before you're back at the level you were at?

While all the suckers in the real world (private sector) are getting wage freezes, pay cuts and benefits cuts, I'm making out like a king. Why? Because I work in a union! We demand fair compensation, raises and tax payer funded pensions regardless of the economic conditions, and if there isn't enough money, just raise the taxes! Unions fight for the rights of the working man!

Remember one thing, unions protect the weak. Is that why you are in the union. When you go on stike and take a pay cut do your union leaders take a pay cut? I work in the private sector and have not had to take a pay cut or benefit cut. I am a leader not a follower that is why I am not a union guy.

No.  Pay levels were frozen at my non union job, and my union job has automatic raises built in.  I really don't care if some people are jealous.  I work 12 hours per day which is 5 more than most whiners I know.

The people negotiating the contracts (the state or company) know exactly what they are doing.  Don't hate the player.

This is a no brainier. Why not ask who still has a job and can you find anyone who is making more? I’m an unemployed tech worker and it looks like I may actually have a chance to be employed again (WHO CARES WHAT I GET PAID!! I WANT TO WORK AGAIN!!) after 5 months of no-work hell. I do networking all over the place and I have yet met anyone who expects to make what they used to.

Are you making less money? - A dumb question. The question to ask is do you have a job which will keep your sanity. If you are making less, who cares, you are still working.

Yes, I am making $6,000 less than last year at this same time. I got a pay cut, and my employer decided to pay 56% of my health insurance v. 70% last year, which is in itself close to $4,000.

A better question is: "Do you find that your employer is taking advantage of the fact that they know you can't go anywhre because there are no jobs out there, and are acting more and more cavalier and more and more hard-nosed?"

No. The company I work for was bought during the beginning of the downturn and the new owner gave out relatively generous, performance-based raises and instituted a bonus plan, which is also fair, clear and performance-based.

yep making 25% less though i can still pay bills and eat... just not much room for anything else.  especially tough after going through 2 yrs of un employment back in 2001-2003 and benefits were nto extended for the first flocks who lost jobs and i hated hearing about airline employees and other having benefits tripled in extensions while i was forgotten..  after working again and spending next 3 years paying off credit cards i had lived off of to only go unemployed again in 2007 for 6 months after buying our fist house, then back at work at a paycut to have it cut again recently...  so i am making the same wages i made in 2001.  tech industry is just one of those areas that gets cut like overhead too often...

Yes, less. I am glad to have a job, however in answer to the question, this year my health care proportion went up 25% and my wages were frozen. Against inflation and all told, this equates to an effective cut of 4 to 5 %.

But there is a longer-term problem. I earned raises of approximately 6% per year since 1996. Compare these against a the cost of a condo, and I've lost at a rate of 2:1 every year since then.

I could have just barely squeezed into that place in 1996. Now it is even less affordable, even after a dozen years of diligence, promotions, and hard work.

Regardless of the amount of money and price, the middle class people are getting shafted. Oh, and if I were like my parents and chose to do good in the world and be a teacher instead of an engineer, I'd be earning just enough to NOT qualify for low-income first-time homebuyer relief. Proof positive that our values are out of whack.

Rephrase the question and ask how you can earn enough money.
This way you will face the music far better.
Does your house cost too much?
Does your spouse or do your relatives spend too much?
Do you really need to go on vacation?
Do you need a new car?
Do you need to play golf every weekend?
Do you need to eat lobster every week?(This is very personal to me for I would have to say, yes.)
See what you can do to cut back and live within your means. Obviously you cannot alter your cash inflow without subjecting yourself to onerous sacrifices in time and effort. Never believe the no pain,no gain theory when talking about finances.
