The labs can cost up to $ 250.00 and I just don't have it. Are there any low cost vet clinics in the Boston area where he can be seen and the labs done @ discount rate ? I'm having such a tough time just making ends meet right now, vet care is out of reach. Thanks

I would try Angell Memorial in Boston - they are part of the MSPCA.

Along these same lines, does anyone know where I could get a low cost spay done for my dog. I recently adopted a stray who the vet estimates is about 12 years old. She was never spayed. I would like to get it done but the vet gave me an estimate of $350-500 depending on medication needed etc... Does anyone know where I could get this done less expensively? I live south of Boston but getting to Boston wouldn't be a problem.
Thanks

Animal Rescue League of Boston offers low-cost vet services. They also have a spay wagon and offer low cost vaccinations and spay/neuters in-house.

KEK - again I would recommend Angell. We had our dog spayed there - our vet wanted $500-600 to do and Angell did it for $150 plus they kept her overnight to monitor her.

Just be sure that your dog has been treated for kennel cough prior.

Sunshine - Thanks so much. I have been feeling guilty about not wanting to spend $500 for the spay but I've already spent $1000+ on dental work (she is now toothless!) and everything else. She is up to date on all her shots including kennel cough. The vet also reccommended she have a masectomy since she was never spayed she is likely to develope breast cancer. I didn't even know this was possible in a dog!

moongrl,

I don't know of any vets that will discount bloodwork and most vets require a blood re-check every 4 months. If the cat stays stable and is not losing weight you can stretch the visits. I know this from experience.

Also, do not purchase the meds at the vet get a prescription and shop around. Roadrunner in Arizona makes a liquid compound and it is about $40 for a 6months supply.

Hope this helps.

Call the Animal Alliance on Silver Street in South Boston.  They are a non-profit and it costs much less to have your animal spayed - they have a good reputation, I brought my pug there and other family members have used them as well.

They also provide other medical care, but the animal must be spayed for them to treat them.

Kek- While you're at the other vet, ask them about the masectomy - on a 12 year old dog that doesn't have cancer, a masectomy sounds bizarre.

Check out Tufts Veterinary School in Grafton.  They do a lot of work for free and there is always an experienced vet involved.  They even spay and neuter (not that you need that for a 10 year old cat) for free, but only in the Spring when the students are hitting that part of the curriculum.  Not sure how all the other care works, but it's worth a call to the main number.

I understand your frustration.
Typically senior blood work and urinalysis runs about 250$ which is when you get the diagnosis of hyperthyroidism.
Once methimazole is started the blood must be checked routinely to ensure thyroid hormone suppression is at a therapuetic dose.
Sometimes other organ functions are compromised and will benefit with the implementation of methimazole so your vet may want a cbc and chemistry to see its impact. Some reference labs have a feline hyperthyroid monitering profile that should fulfill your vets needs. This profile is around 125-175$
One the therapuetic dose is achieved most vets like to moniter weight and a basic free T4 and T4 that is about 50$.
You should not have to pay for a visit.
Find out which profile or data your vet wants and call other vets and see what they charge. These labs have specials and disounts they offer some vets depending on various factors whether it be volume or a good office manager.
Where I work we do annual wellness which is a cbc/basic chem for 40$.A year ago it was 32$ but the labs raise their rates and hange their deals.
Shop around but realize a new vet means you need to obtain all relavent medical history so no tests are repeated.
You would also have to pay for a office visit but their lab services may be cheaper.

With all that said a hyperthyroid cat needs to have full blood work twice a year.
The medication and the disease process itself requires monitering organ and electrolyte function.

I would definitely look into what services Angel Memorial or Tufts can accomadate you with.
