Bonfire of the Vanities. The whole movie was so grotesquely miscast there's a book about it.

Ha, that was my pick too.  Tom Hanks, Melanie Griffith and Bruce Willis.  An absolute shake-your-head cast right there.

This is going way back.  Burt Lancaster and Shirley Booth in the 1952 film, Come Back Little Sheba.  They are supposed to be husband and wife, but she looks old enough to be his mother.   In reality, she was 15 years older than Burt.

Eh...how about waiting to see Ben Affleck's performance before deciding it's bad casting? But while we're on the subject, Johnny Depp as Willy Wonka was an abysmal choice IMO.  Too creepy and twisted even for Wonka.

Jane Fonda as Nancy Reagan in Lee Daniels, The Butler. To cast Jane Fonda as The First Lady is disrespectful to all Vietnam vets!

Kate Capshaw in 'Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom'. The movie really isn't that bad but her performance was annoying and killed her acting career.

Re: What are the worst movies castings ever made?

The Horse Whiperer comes to mind - Robert Redford was too old, the female lead was just not passionate enough, way too cold although that movie introduced us to Scarlett Johanson whom I adore.

Other miscasts - speaking of Batman, did anyone remember the Clooney debacle? Ugh.

Cameron Diaz in Gangs of New York - she had not chemistry with anyone in the movie, and hers was an important role in that storyline. Just didn't fit and tanked the movie for me.

Nick Cage as Ghost Rider - Really???

Nicole Kidman and John Cusack in the Paper Boy. That movie had potential, but alas...

That's all I can remember right now, but there are many more. We should do another thread of "Castings Hollywood Got Right," that would be fun. :)

    Other forgettable, or memorable, roles.

    John Wayne as Genghis Khan

    Brad Pitt as Achilles

Matt Damon and Heath Ledger as Brothers Grimm

I bet if they were offered the same roles today, they would laugh in your face.

This is a slightly obscure one, but one of the worst castings for a female lead in history was Dayle Haddon in the football film North Dallas Forty with Nick Nolte.  Haddon was a model in her first significant role, and while she looked good, her acting was atrocious.
