Re: What is the funniest movie of all-time?

The exclusion of Young Frankenstein completely invalidates this list. As a Boston newspaper you should at least be aware of the fact that Aerosmith wrote "Walk This Way" because they thought that was the funniest line in cinema history.  You omit what many consider to be the greatest comedy of all time, yet you include Tommy Boy?  Seriously?

Glad to see both Planes, Trains & Automobiles ("Excuse me? May I go to the bathroom? Thank you.") and Lost in America representing under-appreciated movies of the 80's, but as others noted you missed several of the decade's best, including:
    • Ferris Bueller's Day Off
    • Better Off Dead
    • Fletch
    • Naked Gun
    • Ghostbusters
    • Stripes
    • Trading Places
Finally, although not always considered a comedy, Pulp Fiction unquestionably has some of the most hysterical, laugh-out-loud moments in big screen history.

Also not appearing on the list:

     Real Genius
     Johnny Dangerously

And if you want to get really technical:

Demolition Man had more laughs in it than than  a lot of the films on the list.

Couldn't agree more with mistersmartarse!  This is a pathetic list.

    Vacation at number 49?!?

Tommy Boy  -- SERIOUSLY!?!?!!!  not even close to to 500 of all time.

Monty Python's Holy Grail is my favorite.

You have to be kidding. A mixture of some of the worse comedies with some great old movies to balance them out.  Young Frankenstein and Silverstreak not on the list but Wet Hot American Summer is on the list?  Blazing Saddles not on the list and not one Peter Sellers' movies. No westerns like Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid or City Slickers.  I think a 12 year old wrote this.

I appreciate how thi list includes some really old movies, unlike some critic lists that go back only twenty years.

    But where is Young Frankenstein?
Did I skip over it?  it can't be missing from the list!

    And the quotes:
    That's Franhken-steen!
Frau Bluecher!  [I forget how to do the umlaut on the keyboard]
Stay close to the candles.  The stairs can be treacherous.
    What knockers!
    Elevate me.      Now doctor?
Aaah sweet mystery of life at last I found you!

Sandler, Spade, and what were you thinking...Alicia Silverstone????? No Woody Allen. Will Ferrel is bad. My Cousin Vinny? This list is a joke. And anyone that complains about older movies not being relevant is an idiot. They have a lot of real classics but if you're dumb enough to not want to watch and see, then that's your problem.

Re: What is the funniest movie of all-time?

One of the funniest movies I have ever seen is one that isn't considered a comedy.

    Jaws.

That scene at the end where the shark is coming up over the back of them boat had me all but falling out of my chair. No one else in the theater saw the humor in it, which made me laugh even harder.
Robert Shaw was hilarious. - "I seen one eat a rockin' chair one time." I'm laughing now just thinking about it.

The only serious part of the movie, I felt, was Shaw's depiction of surviving the sinking of the U.S.S. Indianapolis. Very powerful. It's probably because I know something about how sharks actually behave that made the movie so funny to me.
