Harold and Maude was the quintesential cult movie. The unlikely friendship between an 80 yr. old woman and a young man was an homage to the passion of the 60's and 70's.

What qualifies a film as 'cult'?  Well attended screenings long after release, perhaps?....

Monty Python and the Holy Grail
    The Wall
    Pee-Wee's Big Adventure
    A Clockwork Orange
    Dune

half of those aren't cult films - it's not a list of your favorite movies, folks.

And no Pink Flamingos? One of the first Midnight Movie cult films. I must be getting old.

I agree Repo Man, and A Clockwork Orange should be there.  A case could also be made for Mean Streets, an underestimated Scorsese flick.

Repo Man and Donnie Darko are two of my all-time favorites.  Wonderfully bizarre and lovable movies.

Eating Raoul should get a mention as well.

Real cult films = box office bust but big on laughs:

     Ice Pirates
History of the World Part 1
     Big Trouble in Little China
     The Black Cauldron

and, for the anime fans out there:

     Macross: Do You Remember Love

    3 Favorite in order

1 The Big Lebowski  ( if you get the chance to see it on the DVD there is an intro by Mortimer Something or other that's freaking funny)
    2 Repo Man
    3 Harold and Maude
Honorable Mention  Neighbors (John Belushi, Dan Aykroyd)

I find that the appeal of all these movies is enhanced greatly with the use of casual narcotics, I'm not recommend it ,just mentioning this ("the Rodriguez Brothers don't approve of drugs")

Great to see all the love for Repo Man here.  I watched that movie a bunch of times.  Donnie Darko has some similarities to Repo Man...they both make alternative realities seem very real.

Really?  Where is "The Boondock Saints"?!?

I'd also like to see "Monty Python and the Holy Grail" (instead of "Meaning of Life"), and "Mad Max" and "Scotland PA" should have been on this list.

Totally agree with "Plan 9", "Eraserhead", "Rocky Horror", and "Blade Runner".

Just about every David Lynch movie qualifies as a cult film.  'Mulholland Drive' is super weird, lit up by sexy-weird performances by Naomi Watts and Laura Harring.

I am not ashamed to say, he kind of frightens me.

I know it's not a movie but I thought the first two seasons of Twin Peaks was brilliant, then it got too weird at the end

Also you gotta love the dancing chickens in Eraserhead

Another movie that might merit consideration as a cult movie is 'The Player' by Robert Altman.  I didn't like the movie the first time I saw it but when I watched it again I appreciated it a lot more.
