    "Ghoulish" singers

Probably repeating myself given mention of this band over and over.

No, I don't mean singers that sing about killing things (death metal); I mean rock singers with haunting voices. Ghoulish.

AIC; only live performance of "Rotten Apple" to my knowledge, but dear lord!

    ie, 2:50-3:20; 4:10-4:45

Not great sound quality, and I think this was at the end of the tour when he started using again, but he puts most singers to shame. By a few light years, imo. That sound.

That ghoulish sound, reveling in its menace.

Another side of what I think makes Jagger so damn good in Gimmee Shelter.

And since I'm listening to them now...       a high quality audio-only...

From their demo tape. (a slower, worse version, ended up on facelift - "real thing")

Puts the vast majority of new music to shame.

I saw Al walking through Macy's in a mall one night  (Burlington) when no one was around.

I took a double take -- but he was dressed all in black, and had the trademark hair so I decided to run after him to say hello.   No shame, I admit.  :)

I took a piece of paper I had in my wallet at the time, and asked him to autograph it, and he was glad to give me his autograph.

    I still have it.

ghoulish voices or themes...?   difference there.

"Used To Love Her" is ghoulish in theme, but darn near perky in delivery.  Yet "Mr. Brownstone" could be called a bit ghoulish in both.

"Down By The River" is a ghoulish theme but almost a gospel-like inflection.

Many naturally deep voices are unintentionally ghoulish.  Brad Roberts of CTD comes to mind immediately.

My first choice, however: Johnny Cash - "The Man Comes Around"...I dare anyone to listen to this late at night on a deserted highway.  Frightening.

The Big Bopper's tone and the way he fluctuated his voice was somewhat "Ghoulish".

I don't know if he's ghoulish, but Johnny Cash's rendition of "Hurt" is beautiful and haunting.

    I hurt myself today
To see if I still feel
    I focus on the pain
    The only thing that's real
    The needle tears a hole
    The old familiar sting
Try to kill it all away
    But I remember everything

Well, I was going with voices but whatever goes.

ie, "Them Bones" from the live album, his voice drops and changes into that quality on "...are me"

Or all of "again" from the live album.

NIN too, as jkjband pointed out.

ie, The Wretched; the semi-faint chorus:

    the hopes and prays
    the better days
    the far aways
    forget it

of course Reznor manages to make instrumentals sound ghoulish, ie, Track 3 on The Fragile, Left Side.

Alice Cooper doing part of the vocals on "The Garden" (Gn'R, illusion I), has a different sort of 'ghoulishness'.

The "turned into my worst phobia, a crazy man's utopia; if you're lost no one can show ya, but it sure was glad to know ya."
