I think that's woodchuck. We have a family that lives under my shed. They are relatively harmless unless you have a garden. The cats don't bother them and they don't bother the cats.
But , I think they are close relatives to groundhogs...at least they look alot like them. -

Yes , he seems rather shy. I thought woodchucks and goundhogs were the same thing? He doesn't bother me, I enjoy seeing him! -

Woodchucks and groundhogs are the same thing, as far as I know (and as far as the reference books I have say).
Funny thing is that I've never seen them out as early as Groundhog Day -- they hibernate and in this climate 2/2 is about a month too early for them to stir.
Which probably explains why they always predict more winter -- they're cranky from being woken up from a nice long sleep. -
