I've heard some people say Pink Floyd's stuff is all depressing. I don't pay much attention to lyrics, but I was surprised to hear that. Anyways, on the top of my head:

    1. Goodbye Blue Sky (Pink Floyd)
    2. I'm Not In love (10 CC)
    3. All By Myself (Eric Carmen)
    4. Don't Want To Live Inside Myself (Bee Gees)
    5. Tragedy (Bee Gees)

For me, it's hands down "Tears In Heaven" when you consider what the song is about. Being that I have two young sons of my own, I can't listen to it.

And wasn't James Taylor's "Fire and Rain" about his girlfriend dying, which led to him having a nervous breakdown?

Re: 5 Saddest Songs of all Time

There are many songs about being apart from family written , I am sure, by artists while they are on the road touring without their families. The common misconception about many rock stars in the 70's was that they were all juvenile deliquents with no family life, wife, kids or a real home.

There is no song that tells this better than Neil Young's "Interstate" a song that was never released on any of his "official" LP's. I happen to have a bootleg , that has this song on it.

Also Bob Seger's "Turn the Page" and KISS's "Beth" deal with this subject. I know there is a song by Journey also that is about being apart from loved ones....can't think of the title.

"Ode to Billy Joe" by Bobbie Gentry is also a very sad tale.

"Papa was a Rolling Stone" by the Temptations comes to mind.

Just about every "Blues" song is supposed to be sad, by definition.

    "Layla" is a sad song.

There are surely a million more.

One of the saddest songs I have ever heard has no words. It is "Goodbye Pork Pie Hat" by Charles Mingus. It is on his great 1959 album Mingus Ah Um. The song was written as an elegy for saxophonist Lester Young.

Maybe not the 'saddest' per se, but my top 5 favorite weepy tunes:

    Brokedown Palace - Grateful Dead
You're In My Heart (The Final Acclaim) - Rod Stewart
It's All Over Now, Baby Blue - Bob Dylan
    Philadelphia - Neil Young
Tom Traubert's Blues (Four Sheets to the Wind in Copenhagen) - Tom Waits

Honorable mention: In My Life - Beatles; Late, Brick - Ben Folds; I'll Back You Up, Sister - Dave Matthews Band; Hallelujah - John Cale; Atmosphere - Joy Division

And props to those who mentioned It Makes No Difference by The Band - a truly haunting tune.

Isn't a "bubble gum" song that is sad a contradiction?

In that case, perhaps, "Yummy, Yummy , Yummy" is really a sad song. I mean shouldn't love be in your heart or even better, in your brain? I think this "love in my tummy" that he is singing about is in fact gas, bloating or heartburn.

By the same token, did the Archies ever do a "sad" song? What would they have to be sad about? They are comic book characters who have been teenagers for over 50 years.

Re: 5 Saddest Songs of all Time

OK, first time back in the music forum after embarassing myself so please be gentla. IMO the OP nailed It Makes No Difference, a song a lot of people don't know, but a sad beautiful song. Patches might be the classic tearjerker of the 60's and 70's generation. Props for pulling out Ode To Billy Joe Zilla. Bobbie Gentry, wow. Thank you. I just pulled that up on youtube http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CZt5Q-u4crc. 1967, the impossible dream, Bobbie Gentry and the summer of love. Thank you Zilla. Goodbye porkpie hat, devildavid thank you for that one. My only choice for the list would be When a man loves a woman by Percy Sledge, only because it has some deeply personal connotations for me.
