A little help from the fourm

Hey all,I'm hoping to get some help from you good folks here on the music fourm. My daughter's getting married in July and she just asked me to come up with a song for the "Father-Daughter" dance.Of course, the standard "Daddy's little girl" was my first instinct. But,I'm pretty sure I want to do something different than that.
I've ruled out Maggot Brain,Hell's Bells,Dream On and Stairway to Heaven.I'd prefer something sentimental, short and slow.To give you an idea of what I'm looking for,a couple of the songs I'm considering are 10,000 Maniacs "How you've grown" and  Carole King's "Child of mine" (Not to be confused with "Sweet Child O' Mine").
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks .....

"This Is The Day" by The The.  Stunningly beautiful, appropriate, danceable...and 0.00% cliche.  If/when my daughters get married I'll ask for it assuming I'll be able to stop myself from weeping like Elton John at Gianni Versace's funeral.  ;-)

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X43ZyUGOPyw

Well... you didn't wake up this morning
Because you didn't go to bed
You were watching the whites of your eyes
    Turn red
The calendar on your wall is ticking
    the days off
You've been reading some old letters
You smile and think how much you've changed
All the money in the world
    Couldn't bring back those days.
You pull back the curtains, and the sun burns into your eyes,
You watch a plane flying across a clear blue sky.
THIS IS THE DAY -- Your life will surely change.
THIS IS THE DAY -- When things fall into place.
You could've done anything -- if you'd wanted
And all your friends and family think that you're lucky.
But the side of you they'll never see
Is when you're left alone with the memories
That hold your life together like
    Glue

You pull back the curtains, and the sun burns into your eyes,
You watch a plane flying across a clear blue sky.
THIS IS THE DAY -- Your life will surely change.
THIS IS THE DAY -- When things fall into place.

THIS IS THE DAY -- Your life will surely change.
THIS IS THE DAY -- Your life will surely change.
THIS IS THE DAY -- Your life will surely change.
THIS IS THE DAY -- Your life will surely change.
THIS IS THE DAY -- Your life will surely change.
THIS IS THE DAY -- Your life will surely change.
THIS IS THE DAY -- Your life will surely change.

I Loved Her First by Heartland. It's on the country side. I can tell you it's not short as I danced to it a few years ago. You might not want the song to end.

Look at the two of you dancing that way
Lost in the moment and each other's face
So much in love, you're alone in this place
Like there's nobody else in the world

I was enough for her not long ago
I was her number one, she told me so
And she still means the world to me, just so you know
So be careful when you hold my girl

Time changes everything, life must go on
And I'm not gonna stand in your way

But I loved her first, I held her first
And a place in my heart will always be hers
From the first breath she breathed
When she first smiled at me
I knew the love of a father runs deep

And I prayed that she'd find you someday
But it's still hard to give her away
    I loved her first

How could that beautiful woman with you
Be the same freckle face kid that I knew
The one that I read all those fairytales to
And tucked into bed all those nights

And I knew the first time I saw you with her
It was only a matter of time

I loved her first, I held her first
And a place in my heart will always be hers
From the first breath she breathed
When she first smiled at me
I knew the love of a father runs deep

And I prayed that she'd find you someday
But it's still hard to give her away
    I loved her first

From the first breath she breathed
When she first smiled at me
I knew the love of a father runs deep

Someday you might know what I'm going through
When a miracle smiles up at you
    I loved her first

Being the psycho that I am, I would suggest Cherry Bomb by the Runaways.

Seriously though, I will search through my Rock Ballads encyclopedia and see what I come up with for you.

In My Life  - The Beatles (I think you might know this one)

Maybe you should do two dances -- one sentimental and one to rock out with (the gang here would really be good at suggesting songs for the latter)

Best of luck with all the planning.  I want to hear about your haircut, so please plan to report back on that in July, too.  ;)

I danced to Loundon Wainwright III's song Daughter with my dad at my wedding a few years ago. I love this song and I think it was just quirky enough to fit us.

I think it's become more popular since the movie Knocked Up came out and they used this for the end credits.

    Congratulations!

"My Girl" - very sweet, well-known (if a tad trite), and danceable by almost anyone with feet and a pulse.

I also like the slow version of Pete Townsend's "Let My Love Open The Door"...very touching, and it filled the dance floor at our wedding.

Slim beat me to it.  My uncle danced to "What a Wonderful World" with his daughter, thought I hate (for his sake) to admit they used the Kenny G version, which he inexplicably prefers.

....aren't Muck and the Mires - probably Boston's best band - recording some new tracks in Yorba Linda this week with Kim Fowley?  [the Runaways manager, and all around musical legend....http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kim_Fowley]

I think " What a wonderful world" and Nat and Natalie King Cole "Unforgettable" is on the list. I'm going to suggest these 2 songs to her as well:

Ozzy and Kelly Osbourne - Changes
