Interesting you should mention The The. I have been playing this band in the car for the last couple of days. The thought came to me that this is the most wonderful band in the world that nobody knows about.
I can think of a few CD's that were so good , I had to listen again and again.
These are a few, that I can easily recall:
Sisters of Mercy-Vision Thing
The Cure- Disintegration
Depeche Mode- Violator
Sin After Sin-Judas Priest
Lights in the Night-Flash and the Pan
Nazareth-Hair of the Dog
Brain Salad Surgery-ELP
Let it Bleed-the Rolling Stones
Layla & other assorted love songs-Derek and the Dominoes
Street Survivors-Lynyrd Skynyrd
My Aim is True-Elvis Costello
This Year's Model-Elvis Costello
Armed Forces-Elvis Costello & the Attractions
Harvest-Neil Young
Rust Never Sleeps-Neil Young & Crazy Horse
The Up Escalator- Graham Parker & the Rumour
Double Vision-Foreigner
Caravan to Midnight-Robin Trower
Animals-Pink Floyd -

Little Steven and the Disciples of Soul -- Men Without Women
What Bruce Springsteen and the E-Street Band might have been, if Springsteen hadn't turned out to be such a deuschebag.
Graham Parker (and the Rumor) -- The Up Escalator
A much harder edge than the more critically acclaimed Squeezing Out Sparks, this signalled the end (for the most part) of Parker's association with The Rumor . . . more's the pity.
Warren Zevon -- Stand in the Fire
Live Zevon -- Non-stop energy from start to finish. The album is summed up succinclty during I'll Sleep When I'm Dead when Warren encourages the audience to "Get up and dance! Get up and dance or I'll kill you!"
and, oddly enough . . .
Steve Winwood -- Arc of a Diver
This one just sticks with me. I don't generally use the word "haunting" to describe music (or anything, really) but this album has a tone to it that keeps me listening for what's under the music . . . if that makes any sense. -

In sticking with jkj's original thread regarding albums that were not huge hits but which I could not stop playing at the time:
New York Dolls - (NY Dolls) 1973
Queen II - (Queen) 1974
Generation X - (Gen X) 1978
Valley of the Dolls - (Gen X) 1979
Ace of Spades - (Motorhead) 1980
Heaven Up Here - (Echo and the Bunnyman) 1981
High 'n' Dry - (Def Leppard) 1981
Faith Hope Love - (Kings X) 1990
I don't think any of the albums did initially well when first released. -

Not sure if some of these were huge mega hits, but most were not:
October Project (album named after the band)
Songbird - Eva Cassidy
The Book of Secrets - Loreena McKennitt
State of the Heart - Mary Chapin Carpenter
Now that I've Found You - Alison Krauss
Forever Blue - Chris Isaak
Warren Zevon - Learning to Flinch
Tribe - Abort (gotta go with this, too)
Note: I know someone who was in The The for a few years, in the mid-ninties. Cool band. -

I played Sting's The Soul Cages over and over - it was my first CD, actually, purchased in 1990. It came in a folding, cardboard case. I still love it, actually. -
