    American Guitarists: Guess the outcome

The list below was the starting point for a game thread by a group of strangers (no relation to BDC) to select a favorite "Classic Rock American" guitarist.

Hendrix  was deliberately left OFF of the list.

They've whittled this list to five names over the past four months.

Can you look over this list and figure out who the top five finalists are?  Are the finalists predictable?  Is it that easy to figure out?

Guess the five finalists. Guess in NPO if you want, but anyone who puts them in concise order (highest to lowest score of the top five), will be the ultimate winner here.

HINT: There is a clear front runner.

NOTE: To be fair,  try not to look at anyone else's guess before submitting your guess, so you can be unbiased.  Thanks.

    4) Santana
    5) Vai

(FYI - Carlos was born in Mexico.)

Well, maybe this just wasn't a real test of how predictable this game thread would be ... but so far, none of you are close.  Maybe doing the game thread in this forum would be predictable, since you know one another, but trying to figure out how a group of strangers would judge a list is not very predictable.

Hfx, Matty, and Smitty: you have one name right apiece.

Since no one seems to be around today (or wants to hazard a guess), if you want to submit another list for the heck of it, go for it.

    Hint: Get rid of Santana.

Only one name each?  Ouch, that's discouraging.  And something tells me my next list wouldn't fare much better!

    I know!

I'm kind of shocked.  You're all usually right on the money with all my other quizzes, but I didn't make this one up.  :D

I don't know enough about the topic to know if you're going to be really surprised at how they've voted.

Just hope if you submit another list, you don't take the one you had right off of your list, that would really hurt!

You do not all have the same name right.  Among the three of you, you have three of the names.

First off - Eddie Van Halen was born in the Netherlands.

That being said. My list would be:

    Billy Gibbons
    Joe Satriani
    Joe Perry
    Neil Schon
    Duane Allman

Woah, you've got three of them.

HINTS: Get rid of Satriani.  You kept the (one) correct name on your first list  -- and stole the right one off of Matty's list.

Re: American Guitarists: Guess the outcome

It was perhaps too ambitious to guess from the original long list.  I should have cut it down a bit.  But then -- am always told I make things too easy.

    This was just too tough.

To make it less predictable -- they deliberately left off the names they assumed would be the big front runners: Hendrix, Page, Beck, Clapton, etc.

So if jessey still wants to do guitarists, maybe solve the predictability factor by taking all the predictable names OFF THE LIST.   Go for a surprise factor.

    Go for broke.  :D

Re: American Guitarists: Guess the outcome

Hendrix was omitted I'm guessing because he's such an obvious No. 1?

This list confirms that aside from him, my favorite guitarists are either British or Canadian. That said, I'm guessing the clear frontrunner is SRV.

Re: American Guitarists: Guess the outcome

I believe the definition of American guitarist had more to do with the person playing in an American band, than where they were born, hence, Santana and Eddie VH were considered American guitarists.

SRV is on the list, and that was a great choice, but he's not the front runner.

I'll post the list tomorrow.    It was more difficult to predict what another group of people would pick as their top five than it appeared.  If I had it to do again, I would have made the selection smaller and knocked off a bunch of names.  This was just too subjective.

Allman, Betts, Trucks.  Add in Warren Hayes and Jimmy Herring and give the Allman Brothers Band a clean sweep.

Lists like this are hard because a lot has to do with the age of the group picking the list.  The "best" always favors more recent times.

Please don't let Van Halen be on the list.

Don't worry, DWL, Van Halen did not make the top five.  :D

As mentioned earlier, what this really shows is how personalized and individualized these game threads really are.

But I hope it will be kind of fun (maybe!) to see what a bunch of strangers would arrive at for their top picks.

I also am not sure if it jessey will want to still do the guitarist thread, maybe making some alterations  --- or has just decided to switch gears.

Excellent job, and not just using the hints either, b/c you had Allman right from the start (pivotal) and added Dharma in your second round (I think Matty did, also) -- stole Betts from Matty and then SRV from Hfx.

This is how they stand in order:

    Allman, Duane - 97
    Bolin, Tommy - 77
    Vaughan, Stevie Ray - 56
    Dharma, Buck - 48
    Betts, Richard - 16

Any real surprises, or does this make sense?
Does Allman make sense?  I don't know enough about the topic, but from that list, do you come even close to agreeing?
