    Back To Back Albums

Looking at the body of work over an artist/bands career, what do you feel were their best albums they put out back to back? If you want to throw in live albums that's ok, but I'm going to stay with studio albums back to back for now. Acts that have a large catalog, it may not be that obvious as one's taste will differ. I'm just going to start with a couple; I'm more interested in what others think.

Beatles -  Rubber Soul & Revolver

U2 - The Joshua Tree & Achtung Baby

Both Sgt. Peppers and Magical Mystery Tour came out in 1967,but I think Magical Mystery Tour came before Sgt. Peppers and then came the White Album after.

Husker Du:  pick any consectutive 2 from Zen Arcade, New Day Rising, Flip Your Wig and Candy Apple Grey.  Plus the 2 preceding them were also outstanding.

Name another band that never released a bad, or even a mediocre, album.

Well first off, one needs to agree with your premise on Husker Du. I can't express any opinion, knowing virtually nothing about their music. Second, they only released 6 albums from 1983 to 1987. Any band that has any amount of longevity is bound to release an occasional bum album.

OTOMH, I would say Radiohead, Pixies and Led Zep.

Talk Talk and The Smiths also come to mind, as does Crowded House.

    Maybe The Mats...

And Morphine always makes my list.

I believe these were separated by Rattle & Hum - perhaps you're considering that a "live" album but IMO it includes way too many new studio tracks.  OTOH if the thread instructions were to name three, these might be the ones for me!

For an older band:   "Future Games" & "Bare Trees"  - FWMac

For a newer band:  "Teen Dream" & "Bloom" - Beach House  (small catalog, granted)

Are solo artists not included in this thread?  We can do those in another thread, fine with me; just wasn't sure.

I never make the same mistake twice.  I make it five or six times, just to be sure.

I did know about the Rattle & Hum sound track being in the middle of them, I was trying to stay away from live albums sticking to studio albums back to back.

    1)  Doesn't all that apply to everyone's opinion on this thread?  There are a number of bands mentioned here I either loathe or have never heard of.

    2)  Re longevity, that's my point.  IMO, they had an astonishing run of brilliance and I can't think of another band that didn't release some substandard material.
