    Baiting the hook

There are certain songs that for me start off with such a pleasurable sound that I can't help but be drawn into them. They bait the hook with such treats for the ear that they have me hooked in the first few seconds. Below is a sample of some of the songs that do that for me. How about you?

"Annie Get Your Gun" - Squeeze

I love the opening to "I Feel Fine," the first use of feedback in recording history.
And speaking of that band from Liverpool, "Day Tripper."

Lot of good songs mentioned. Bellhorn mentioned Duran Duran in another thread but I have to give you three of their tracks that caught my attention immediately.

Sorry David, too many to mention without getting blisters from typing.

I always liked the beginning of David Crosby's 'Almost Cut My Hair', when you start a song by whispering " I will now proceed to entangle the entire area ( or whatever he says), I feel I have to listen because there might be a hidden message in there somewhere.

Tom Petty and the heartbreakers had some songs with great hooks too. Two that spring immediately to mind are Refugee and Don't Do Me Like That.

BTO seems to have a great knack for catchy openings to their songs.

    Narcolepsy
    Landed

There is not enough time in the day to answer this question. Almost every favorite song of mine has this in it.

    Re: Baiting the hook

I guess I should have made it more clear what I was looking for. The songs I listed have intros that by themselves pack so much pleasure that the rest of the song is almost an afterthought. Not saying that I don't love the whole song, but the intro is such a transcendent sound to my ears, that it gives me as much pleasure as an entire great song does.

The prime example is the opening to Squeeze's "Annie Get Your Gun". The intro is such that I wouldn't have minded if they just played that over and over again for 2 or 3 minutes. I still love the song, but the intro is something else. It's a few seconds of intense aural pleasure.
