    Best Opening Riffs

One of the coolest things bout rock is when you hear the opening licks to the song and immediately know what the song is. So what are your top opening riffs. It doesn't have to be guitar only; it can be keyboard/piano/organ, violin, bass, drums -- whatever.

I was just going to do top 10 but couldn't stop. When I reached 30, I decided to stop then realized there still were great Led Zeppelin songs I missed. I could have more Zeppelin in the mix. There's plenty of great stuff I missed too from groups like Deep Purple, Whitesnake. Jim Steinman has a songs with Meat Loaf and others that have great opening riffs, mostly piano. But for now, here's one (long) list:

    1. Layla (Clapton)
    2. Highway Song (Blackfoot)
    3. No One Like You (Scorpions)
    4. Trampled Underfoot (Led Zeppelin)
    5. The Show Must Go On (Queen)
    6. Stairway to Heaven (Zeppelin)
    7. Immigrant Song (Zeppelin)
    8. Whole Lotta Love (Zeppelin)
    9. Crazy On You (Heart)
    10. Runaway (Bon Jovi)
    11. Feel Like a Number (Bob Seger)
    12. My Kinda Lover (Billy Squier)
    13. Paranoid (Black Sabbath)
    14. Crazy Train (Ozzy)
    15. You Shook Me All Night Long(AC/DC)
    16. Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap (AC/DC)
    17. Sloop John B (Beach Boys)
    18. Games People Play (Alan Parsons Project)
    19. Little Wing (I like Clapton's versions better but Hendrix is fine).
    20. Touch Me (The Doors)
    21. Hotel California (Eagles)
    22. Sweet Talkin' Woman (ELO)
    23. Rhiannon (Fleetwood Mac)

I was going to mention that song but had a brain lock and couldn't think of the name of the song.

I immediately thought of Barracuda when I saw this thread . . .

then I noticed it was already on your list.

I like a thread that can neatly wrap itself up in one post.

    Good job.

I'll add the piano riffs at the beginning of both She's the One and Backstreets.

"Like A Rolling Stone" - Bob Dylan

To me, that opening snare shot, jangly guitar and bloozy organ is just sublime - the point where Dylan really plugged in and embraced his rock and roll spirit.  It was so good that it's been copied or mimicked many times but never duplicated.  Some others:

"Ho(n)ky Tonk Woman" - Rolling Stones
"Sweet Jane" - Velvet Underground (h/t uclid)
    "Anthem" - Rush
"My City Was Gone" - Pretenders (bass riff)

"Werewolves Of London" - Warren Zevon (piano)

    "Sugar Magnolia" - Grateful Dead

"The Streets Only Knew Your Name" - Van Morrison

"The Wanton Song" - Led Zeppelin
    "Goin Down" - Gov't Mule

    tbc...

More Beatles ... "Ticket to Ride", "Lady Madonna", "Let It Be"

    Great topic!

That is a good riff, and the solo by Eddie in that song is my favorite by him.  I find that in general his solos sound a bit the same and rely on gimmicks too much, but on that one he just plays and it really cooks.

Another superb opening riff by Van Halen is the one on 'Ain't Talkin' 'Bout Love'.

'I Feel Fine' is a great one.  I also love the way 'Eight Days A Week' starts with the fade-in.

    Re: Best Opening Riffs

I never really thought of The Beatles in terms of riffs (I have no idea why), but ... now that I think of it, there are some great ones.

Come Together has to be one odf the best.
    Two of Us
    Get Back
    When I'm 64

The opening chord for Hard Day's Night would be good for the thread of identifying a song on one note.

    Some other non-Beatles:

    Piano Man (Billy Joel)
    Sunshine of Your Love (Cream)
    White Room (Cream)
    It's Not the Night (Cars)
    Heartbeat City (Cars)
Chicago (CSN) -- very cool piano riff.
Caught Up In You (.38 Special)
Green Grass and High Tides (Outlaws)
I'm Just a Singer (Moody Blues) -- One of the best drum openings followed by a very cool bass riff.
    Gemini Dream (Moody Blues)
    Freebird (Lynyrd Skynyrd)

Just Got Paid - ZZ Top (Billy G.)

Voodoo Chile (Slight Return) - Jimi

    Crazy Train - Ozzy (Randy)

    Unchained - VH (Eddie)

Rusty Cage - Soundgarden (Kim T.)
