    Best Rock Video

So was MTV a good thing? Do you have favorite video's or are you a purist? I actually like video's or promo clips as they were called. Obviously Bohemian Rhapsody is what may have taken it all to a new level.

Anyway, here is one of my nominees:

If Satan met up with Lemmy, who would bow to who? My money is on Lemmy never bending a knee.

Everything Guns and Roses did.  There videos reeked Rock and Roll.

    Welcome to the jungle
    Sweet child O'Mine
Paradise City - side note.  I was at this concert in Giant Stadium.  There is a shot of Axel from his Left where you can see my girlfriend, at the time, in the stands.  She's slightly out of focus.

Was thinking of November Rain video of GNR. When I think of that song, I think of my girlfriend at the time, who made tomato soup by adding ketchup and boiled water together.

This is an old video and not that dramatic, but Kiss's I was Made for Loving You video clip, was one of the first advertisements for rock groups that I can remember seeing on TV.

Peter Gabriel Sledgehammer and Herbie Hancock Rock-It were two that I really liked. And Thomas Dolby She Blinded Me With Science was pretty good too.

I think the ones that combined some weird or startling images with good songs were the ones that stayed with me the most.  A few like that I would nominate would be 'Synchronicity II' by the Police, 'Once In a Lifetime' by Talking Heads, and 'Ashes to Ashes' by David Bowie.

I was never real big on videos, but there were a few I liked. It's been so many years, I can't think of them off the top of my head, although a few of them that have been mentioned already, I like: Sledgehammer, She Blinded Me with Science, November Rain, Bohemian Rhapsody.

I usually associate videos with music from the 1980s, but there are two since then that stand out. Soul Asylum's "Runaway Train" and Johnny Cash's "Hurt."

Blue October's "Calling You" the second video with the blind guy walking with his kid.

I agree, the Runaway Train video is extremely well done.

I think the choices listed so far are all great videos.Probably, the most groundbreaking video to me is Michael Jackson's "Thriller".My personal top 3 video choices would be:

    Beastie Boys- Sabatoge

    Red Hot Chili Peppers-Dani California

For me, "Sledgehammer" is the gold standard in rock videos; not surprising as Peter Gabriel is an inherently visual artist.

Talking Heads also had some great clips...one of those bands which seem to stretch the medium.  Nothing But Flowers is a personal fave.

    Some other great ones:

    New Order - True Faith
Van Hagar - Right Here, Right Now
Radiohead - Paranoid Android, Karma Police
Foo Fighters - My Hero, Learn To Fly
    NIN - Closer, Only
RHCP - Californication, Otherside, Can't Stop
Fatboy Slim - Weapon Of Choice (an all-time classic...)
The Replacements - Basta(rds) Of Young (the perfect anti-video)

P.S.  If you haven't seen the Muppets' parody of the 'bohemian rhapsody' video, it is five minutes of hilarity, unbound.  Find it on the web...you won't regret it.

I don't know that it's the best video but I always liked the video that goes along with the song: "Black Hole Sun". Very eerie and mysterious. Kind of like a sci-fi, a little scary, Halloween song.

I was going to post about the "Whip It" video but the imagery in my mind was too uncertain. Are Devo members wearing cone like hats and wearing sunglasses? Does somebody swing a bullwhip? I think Devo is from Akron, Ohio (20-30 mi. S. of Cleveland).  Please, somebody correct me if I am wrong about any of my statements.   Also, Talking Heads kicked butt.

I really liked Van Halen's videos, especially Jump.

And DLR doing "Just a Gigolo" was hilarious.

Can't think of any others.  Did any other Rock and Roll people do videos?

Zillagod, I can understand part of the reason you would like the song/video "Whip It".  I can remember that sometimes Godzilla would knock over skyscrapers by whipping hs tail.

I have to be terribly honest about this. The more hot chicks in the video, the better I like it because I feel that they bring me closer to God.

Now I know what you are going to say - Jessey, that's deep. But sometimes I can be a very spiritual person.

Interesting video.  I watched it twice.  Aside from this video, different ideas like "appreciation of beauty" and "lust" can get to be deep subjects.  Myself, I am only human, so I also have a feeling for what you said in your post.  I would not have said it in those words but I could have said something similar.  Then again, maybe you were only joking in the above post.

I've always liked the pictures really poignant music created in my head better than anything I ever saw on MTV -- although I freely admit I never watched a whole lot of MTV that wasn't Beavis and Butthead.

I never joke when it comes to the female gender and my total devotion to them. I worship them near and afar. And when they are combined with Rock and Roll, that is about as heavenly as life gets. If this video is not a religious experience, then I do not know what is.

    Re: Best Rock Video

I would have to say that that Motley Crue video probably sums up the MTV era as well as any other. Hot for Teacher is a better video because Van Halen was a better band, but Girls, Girls, Girls probably takes the prize because it exemplifies what that period (and that genre) was all about. The music didn't have to be any good -- there was no shortage of slutty chicks around to deflect your attention away from the fact that the music sucked. It's the same principle as a magician who entices you to look down his asssitant's dress while he's pulling rabbits out of his pants . . .  or The Runaways, a full decade before, now that I think of it.

Could you imagine what they might have done if MTV had been big in 1977?
