Mr. Freude99, those are all great favorites of mine too.

But the greatest "long song" of all time is "In-a-gadda-da-vida" by Iron Butterfly.

You can't talk about "loooooooong" without mentioning this great classic.

Your mention of the Neil Young song reminds me that many of his live albums include extended versions of some of his great songs. 'Cortez the Killer" is often extended on some concert versions. I also own a huge collection of Deep Purple live shows, they can extend some songs like "The Mule", "Child in Time" and "Space Truckin'" well over 15 minutes.

The Grateful Dead have too many to list, so I left them off.  I was recently browsing thru my 100 or so live Dead concert cassettes that are collecting dust in my attick.  Its amazing how many 90 minute sets they played that have only 6, 7, or 8 songs on them.

The live version of 'Dazed and Confused' on the movie soundtrack clocks in at 26:52.  Plenty of excess in there needless to say but some good stuff as well.  Jimmy pulls out the full bag of gadgets.

Dead Horse leading into Coma (it's more or less one song anyway)... and I'm with you...

Actually...I like playing November Rain, Dead Horse, Coma, , then Estranged.

Whatever Slash did, the november rain riffs is one of the best in rock.

    But also

Zeppelin - Since I've been lovin' you
The Doors:  The End, When the Music's Over, The Soft Parade, Rider's on the Storm

Dead Horse is a great song too, I like both Estranged and November Rain, but Coma goes from just a very good to great song to just flat out great in the last 4 to 5 minutes, it moves to amazing.

Once in while I will put in a a Guns CD and ask myself how in the world did they mess that up, they had another 4 or 5 great cd's in them.

Oh I thought of another one for the list...

Ok, it appears to be studio. Good call with Traffic. Plenty to choose from there.

I am going to guess the barometer here is 10:00 and longer.

Quick ones that come to mind right away:

    Grateful Dead - Terrapin Station
    Arlo Guthrie - Alice's Restaurant
    Desolation Row - Dylan
    Voodo Chile - Hendrix
    Toad - Cream
    Telegraph Road - Dire Straits

    Re: Favorite Long Songs

A few 80's extended dance mixes leapt to mind:

David Bowie "Let's Dance" (LP version) - featuring Stevie Ray on guitar, some full-on conga beats and some sweet sax soloing, it's a whole different song.

Talk Talk - "It's My Life" (12") - hard to find, but soooo worth it...killer bassline throughout...puts No Doubt's terrible cover to shame and yet speaks to why they sovered it in the first place.

Prince - "It's Gonna Be A Beautiful Night" - the epic closer from the spawling, messy, but satisfying "Sign O' The Times" LP.

Frankie Goes To Hollywood - "Relax" (12") - unreal how good of a song this still is...it nearly created a whole genre of electronic music (and culture).

Chris Rea - "The Road To Hell" (full version) - OK, so most of the extended part is mostly talking, but it's still an awesome song...from a very underappreciated guitarist-songwriter.

I'd have to say one of my favs is Telegraph Road by Dire Straits. You should hear the live version I have from Hamburg, Germany '98.

Van Morrison's Hymns to the Silence is also a beautiful long song.
