    Great Backing Bands

Yeah, we know the frontman usually gets a lot of the credit and most of the best action, but there are a few artists who wouldn't be able to find fame with a roadmap if it weren't for their trusty backing bands.  (OK, that might be a bit harsh, but you know what I'm getting at.)  Note: they may not necessarily have a "the" in front of the name.

Who are your favorite "guys behind the guy"...??  My top 5:

    The Attractions
    The Heartbreakers
    Double Trouble
    The Family Stone

    Crazy Horse

Bonus: The X-pensive Winos (just 'cause I like the name...)

They were Keith Richards' side project, although I recall them being billed as "Keith Richards & The Xpensive Winos" when they toured as well.  Perhaps I'm mistaken, but I counted them anyway....

It is hard to call the Band and the Heartbreakers as back-up bands. Crazyhorse as well. But for the sake of this conversation, these are the three I would name. And just for good measure - The Spiders from Mars.

However, the greatest has to be the Funk Brothers. Without them, there is no Motown.

That's a good call jessey. Another one like that was the Muscle Shoals Rhythm Section who backed up a lot of the Stax/Volt stuff. I would also mention The Pips, as well as the Dap Kings backing up Sharon Jones.

i almost consider 4 of the jackson 5 a backing band, and they really knew how to groove it.

as a lark, how about the lonely hearts club band?

Guess I didn't realize they all played (except for Michael) -- somehow, I thought more of them were vocals only.  My bad.

    Re: Great Backing Bands

Actually, only Tito and Jermaine played. Tito - guitar; Jermaine - bass. Marlon, Jackie and of course Michael only sang. Although there are some clips that have Marlon playing the bongos. However, that playing was never recorded. Most of the J-5 hit recordings had session players from LA on them. Some of the Funk Bros had moved to LA in 72 when Motown moved most of the recording sessions there.

When they left Motown and Randy joined the group, he did bring skilled musicianship with him; percussion and keyboards.

However, with the hit albums from the late 60's to mid 70's, the Jackson 5 were basically a singing group.

The band that backed up the Blues Brothers was a finely assembled band.

In Response to Re: Great Backing Bands : They didn't, no need to apologize.  Tito could play, Jermain sorta.  The rest, no.  But Michael could write, which means I just bet he had some piano skills.  Dad could play, but dad was an a55hole - so I ain't counting him.

thanks -- everybody -- for the sanity check.  And about the dad  -- no better comment was ever made!!

The MGs are definitely right up there, and I'll throw in Tower Of Power and the Memphis Horns.  The Funk Brothers are gods, indeed.

    A few more:

    The Bad Seeds
    The Delaware Destroyers
    The Mothers Of Invention
    Wings
    Band Of Gypsies
