I'd replace Peggy with Aretha, Billie or Etta.  Definitely keeping Ella and Sarah.

Chrissie Hynde is definitely the GOAT, in my opinion. Also have always loved Natalie Merchant.

Agree; nice list.   Whitney Houston is probably at the top of most "official" lists.

Asking for only three is too tough. :)

I'm sure in pop circles, which is not our usual focus, Mariah Carey would be considered one of the all-time greats, and certainly one of the most influential.   Never been a fan, but her pipes are legendary.

Add: Nina Simone and Dolly Parton

For musical theatre:  Bernadette Peters and Kristen Chenoweth.

The reason I pick  Chrissie Hynde is because of her range.  She can go hard-assed rock, or she can sing a soft ballad like "I'll  Stand By You"  (Mrs. Dobler's favorite). Her versatility and sound make her No. 1 for me.

I probably missed these other names earlier, but I'll add Aimee Mann, Johnette Napolitano, Nora Jones, Allison Krauss, Natalie Maines, Julianna Hatfield and Sheryl  Crow.

Gotta add my vote for Aretha, of course. All you regulars know I'm crazy about her. And of course Alison Krauss, too. I could listen to those two sing all day long.

Another name I'd like to throw in a mention for is Linda Thompson, who recorded some great vocals with her husband at the time, Richard, another favorite performer of mine. I love her performance on this song, "Walking On A Wire" from the great album Shoot Out the Lights

Whenever I come across a poll like this I feel it is my duty to make sure Martha Davis gets her due respect.

Maybe it's just the smoky voice . . .   or maybe it's the actual cigarette in her mouth (remember those?), but something about this woman just makes me look at all the other names on this list and scoff.

Just wanted to state for the record that I've been in love with Rickie Lee Jones since 1978.

Also, Patti Smith and Aimee Mann should get a mentions here.
