Also while I generally don't like the new Alice in Chains....

"Stone" from the new album is mean...metal...

If Layne was still around to sing this properly....

    F**k heroin.

I could not agree more on Alice in Chains. That band was probably light years away from many other so-called Grunge bands. Their sound with Staley was unique, as was their ability to move in- between heavy and soft rock.  I was lucky enough to see them live right before the Unplugged session, and they sounded great.

I wonder how good they might have become had Staley stayed clean. Their last studio album, Jar of Flies, was their best by far imo, and gave us an inkling of just how far they had come as songwriters and performers. I give Cantrell props for going on, and doing what he loves,  but Staley was the voice of that band, his sound, instantly recognizable, and you just cannot replace that with a new singer.

Drugs suck, and anyone who tells you that they make you a more creative, better musician is just fooling themsevles.

    My recent favourites:

The Youth - it's not really a video, it's more of a promo.  They are a killer (proper) r&b band from Copenhagen.  All can play, all can sing, all (great IMO) original songs...and this little promo perfectly captures what their live shows are like:  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oaHhBCY55Hk

The Ricky C Quartet - Not a punk band, not a garage band, not a pub rock band....a bit of a hybrid.  I'm probably biased because they're mates of mine, but I love the lo-fi silliness of it:  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mr4h55vBg3Q

The Jackets - This isn't new, but it's new to me.  The Jackets have become a top favourite band of mine overnight.....the singer, Jackie, is a brilliant performer.  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T6qZeIBFlM4

    All time favourites:

Rolling Stones - best Rice Krispies American tv commercial ever:   http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nZBmhEMFdl0

"Some new lot from Leighton Buzzard" - So sad most performers can't have a laugh like this anymore:  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2t228rxfVlk

Los Shakers - Obviously, unashamedly, totally derivative of the greatest band ever....but in 1965 Uruguay these guys came up with a song that would have been a strong track by the Beatles and video that made "Hard Day's Night" proud:  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D6VqPh9vP74

    The Eels - Genius:  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5X5Dlkpdi3E

Thee Spivs - I love hi-tempo, joyful, primitive music, surreality and the late, great, much lamented Spivs:  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=62h0BLD3DKI

Very nice and quite unexpected.   I know so little about Cohen's music on the whole, but that was magical.   Much appreciated.    PS:  Now I know who Sharon Robinson is, too.  :)
