    Real hate songs

    Sorry, I couldn't resist.  :P

"Hate" might be too strong a word, so "dislike", "putdown" or "rebuke" is OK, even if tongue-in-cheek or even a classic "torch" song.

"Tear Off Your Own Head" - Elvis Costello

"She Hates Me" - Puddle Of Mudd

"You're So Vain" - Carly Simon

"How Do You Sleep" - Lennon

    "F**k You" - Cee-lo Green

    and maybe my favorite:

"Like A Rolling Stone" - Dylan

Some of the best hate songs are the ones directed at former managers etc. who ripped off the artist.

A couple of Stones songs that may not qualify as hate, but at least as misogynist contempt:

    'Stupid Girl'

    'Under My Thumb'

There is a very good cover of Stupid Girl by Ellen Foley on her neglected 1979 album, Night Out.

If you don't recognize the name Ellen Foley, she is the female voice on Meat Loaf's Paradise by the Dashboard Light.  She also did some acting, with a recurring role on the sitcom Night Court.

I mentioned this band on my thread about Canadian artists.  The lead singer really has some pipes, doesn't he?  He shifts into an anguished scream in most of their songs, but he manages to make it sound good.

No "hate-song" compilation would be complete without Tonio-K's H-A-T-R-E-D, which contains the evocative lines:

Yes, I wish I was as mellow, as -- for instance -- Jackson Browne,

But Fountain of Sorrow my @ss muthaf#&ker

I hope you wind up in the ground!

    Lovely.

    Just lovely.

Oh . . .  and did anybody mention Bob Dylan's Positively 4th Street?

That is one epic downer of a song.

Now you listen here! He's not the Messiah . . .   he's a very naughty boy!

That's what I get for posting with a nasty cold: My post completely failed to convey what I meant.

What I meant is simply that the songs we're listing tend to mainly capture anger at an individual target, but aren't what I would consider genuine "hate" speech/song....ie...skinhead hardcore....

Institutional hate wasn't really what I was going for, and I have no experience with skinhead hardcore...

...with that said, it only makes sense that music has a polar opposite of sugary rainbow pop love songs, which kind of IS the point of the thread.

Some of Bob Marley's songs are positively seething with hate - for the man, the state, the church, etc. and yet also often a hopefulness that evens it out.

Liz Phair's Exile In Guyville is pretty strident in its misandry, but tongue-in-cheek, too, as is some of Ani DiFranco's music.

Sometimes hate can be just a pose; other times, it's quite genuine.; the same could be said of love.

    Re: Real hate songs

I've read the last few posts re "Skinheads" and feel dutybound to add:

    • Most "Skinheads" I know, 95% or more, are the conventional, normal, historic types of Skinheads...have shaved heads, into reggae/ska, introduced reggae into the UK/US, hold very modern, liberal, anti-bigotry beliefs and are the sort of people you should be happy for your children to marry.
    • They despise the tiny minority of violent, racist morons with shaved heads that have besmirched the Skinhead legacy and, in a small way, to a few, have highjacked the word Skinhead.

Is this a US/UK thing?  Proper Skinheads here are on the side of good, our side!
